Migrating from SBS 2003

Hi

We are looking to migrate from SBS 2003 to Server 2012 Essentials R2. Our current server has two network connections, one to the internet via a router and one to the internal LAN. The server is currently our DHCP and DNS server. Is this still the prefered setup for 2012? We will be looking to use remote access to the server. I have seen on the migration instructions for the original release of Essentials that you had to re-configure the SBS server to use the one NIC before migrating but it is not in the instructions for R2. Any help would be appreciated.

Devices and Users Disappearing from Dashboard on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

I have noticed a few similar post to this issue, however, no one has posted a resilution. Currently, I have a small business server that handles 10 employees. Just recently the server started dropping devices and users from the dashboard and causing issues with remote log on (How I manage the server). I noticed that services did not start or where stopped and manually started the three services that where stopped. Everything came back, I updated and restarted. Same issue.

Does this mean that everytime I restart the server, I have to physically drive to the office and restart the services? or find a script to check and restart the services? Or is there a fix for this? THis acton also affects some of the applications that are on the server such as Quickbooks.

Any Suggestions?

Migrate Or Start From Scratch - SBS 2003 R2 To Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

I've been reading about migration to 2012 R2 Essentials (from SBS 2003 R2) and wondering if it would be easier for me to just start from scratch.

I've already moved our exchange to office 365, so that takes care of that complication.

We have a total of 4 users, so I'm thinking it might be simpler, or at least as easy, to just start from scratch with a fresh install.

Opinions welcome.

Thanks.

Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 - Windows Server Essentials Connector Wizard fails - server not available

When attempting to run the Windows Server Essentials Connector Configuration Wizard, I am able to go thru the first few screens:

1. Server is auto detected and I can select it on from the list (only 1 server present and found)

2. Wizard connects and asks for user name and password.  I have tried to different accounts on the server (first is an admin account which it gives me a warning and I say yes I want to use the admin account, second is non-admin account).

3. Wizard fails with error message "the server is not available. Try connecting this computer again...." (see image)  Server can be reached by IP address and name at this point, so it is available.

I am trying to connect from a computer that was connected to a WHS V.1 server.  WHS V.1 connector software was uninstalled thru control panel, and then Serever 2012 connector was installed.

In step 1 have have tried connecting by selecting the server name that is found, and also by typing the server address. Fails at same point no matter which I use.+

Anywhere access not working even after successful configuration.

I have just set up windows server 2012 essentials on a server. I successfully configured it and the computer told me that too.

After that I set up anywhere access through the dashboard and got a domain from Microsoft. It configured everything with no errors (it did not come up with any or show any after).

When I then try to connect on the new domain (Custom).remotewebaccess.com (where custom is my personalised domain during AA setup) it just comes up on my iPad server stopped responding. When I do it on my laptop it says I cannot reach the page. it worked perfectly Saturday evening then stopped working Sunday. I ran the repair and it diagnosed anywhere access and checked stuff and came back with no errors still. I still cannot connect.

I decided to clean install S2012 on Sunday eve and configured on Monday. I still cannot connect to the remote web access. I can connect through the server ip and I can go to the connection page to connect computers and remote desktop works fine. it is just this anywhere access that is not working.

does anyone know what the problem is and/or know how to fix it?

Disk Cleanup Utility in Server 2012 Essentials R2?

$

We have used and relied on the Windows Disk Cleanup tool for many years in many generations of Windows.  We recently installed a new server using Server 2012 Essentials R2 as the operating system.  When I select a disk (right click/properties/general) on the server, Disk Cleanup is nowhere to be found.  We see Disk Cleanup in its usual location, even on the non-R2 version of Server 2012 Essentials.  Is there some reason why it was removed in R2?

Thanks.

Can't see USB drives when creating restore key

Running Windows 2012 R2.  All patches installed. I had two computers I wanted to restore fully to a prior backup. Let's just say Windows 10 upgrade didn't go well and the built in uninstall wasn't very good.

Anyway, I went into 2012 R2 and into Tools and then clicked the button to create a key.  Problem is no matter what size USB stick I place in the server, it never shows in the pulldown.  Tried 2GB, 8GB, 16GB, 64GB.  All different brands.  Refreshed a bunch and nothing.  The sticks do show in Windows explorer so they are physically there and recognized by the OS.  Any idea why they don't show up to be used for restoration media?

I'll probably end up doing a PXE restore but still not working right.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Anywhere Access - One User Failing

One single user, that was working previously, is no longer able to connect via anywhere access.

  1. I have tested their password, works correctly
  2. I can log in to the Remote Web Workspace with the username and password
  3. Other users including new users can connect to the VPN via Anywhere access
  4. The problem is not machine specific

The server is running 2012 R1 essentials.  As I had mentioned it worked previously. I have

  1. Server is updated and rebooted
  2. I have turned off and back on in the Essentials Dashboard, the users account to access it
  3. I have tested this on multiple machines

Any Ideas are appreciated?

VPN created with connector software is set to public. How to change to private on Windows 10 home

How do you change a VPN connection in WINDOWS 10 to private.

Windows 8 home desktop upgraded to 10 home.

Used Windows10.0-KB2790621-x64 (pre-release or beta connector for 10 and 2012r2 essentials) to connect to the offsite 2012 essentials server. The connector software installed the VPN and the launchpad. Connecting with the VPN works. I can open the launchpad and see shared folders, dashboard, and RWA.

The problem is that I cannot ping netbios name of the essentials server or any other pc through the VPN. In the network and Sharing Center the VPN is listed as public. I am 99% sure I need this set to private since it can't be domain.

Guidance Sought on repairing/rebuilding Server 2012 Essentials

$

I am going to have to bite the bullet.

If I am honest my Windows Server 2012 Essentials box has been having issues for some time. Whenever I add a network attached disk or NAS box, or run a media server such as Plex I end up with huge spikes on my network. This has been going on for far too long and is preventing me from fully utilising my netowrk as I want. There is nothing to indicate that a hardware fault is causing the problem.

I am running a local domain with the Windows Server 2012 Essentials being the main file and print server as well as DC. I have another DC running Windows Server 2012 Standard, also running as a secondary (little used) file and print server and WSUS.

By problem is how to repair or rebuild the Essentails server? What are my options for a repair (I am guessing it is much more involved than sticking in an optical disk amd rebooting and selecting a Repair option).

If I decide to rebuild what are the the implications for my domain? If I remember correctly an Essentials server must be the first DC created for any domain (having said that I am getting old and the memory is not as good as it used to be). Does this mean that I will basically have to completely junk the domain and rebuild both servers in a new domain? Or is it possible to tranfer roles to the Standard server, rebuild the Essentials unit, and then transfer back roles?

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated!

I'm running Server 2012 R2 Essentials as a virtual machine in Hyper-V. The host is Server 2012 R2. Installing System Center Endpoint Protection works fine on the host, but not on the guest (installer says current OS not supported). Can anyone tell me why?

Restricted Mode

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and I have set up a domain network about a few months ago. Now, when I go onto a website like YouTube on Microsoft Edge (as running on Windows 10) - the restricted mode is enabled by default. So I scrolled down to disable it and refreshed the page, the setting has turned back to where it was. So, I am just wondering if there is something like this that you can turn off by the server?

Thanks! :)

Abrupt Slowdown in 2012 R2 Essentials Network

$

About a month ago, we installed a small Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials network (one server, eight workstations).  Everything was fine and the speed was excellent (gigabit Ethernet).  Yesterday around noon, the communication speed between the workstations and server dropped dramatically.  Now even simple things like changing directories on the server (from a workstation) and opening and closing MS Office files (Word, Excel) housed on the server takes a very long time.  The primary line-of-business application is on the server (client/server configuration) and takes several minutes just to open.

The server itself works fine.  It loads the primary business application immediately, as it always has.  Both the server and the workstations (Windows 7 Professional OS) can access the Internet, email etc. fine.  The problem seems to be very sluggish workstation access to the server.  This process worked flawlessly for over thirty days, then all of the sudden became mired in quicksand.

There is no sign of a hardware problem (although I am going to bring in a new Ethernet switch and piece of CAT-5e cable for testing purposes).  Assuming that this is not due to a hardware failure, could it be a local DNS problem stemming from the server?  If so, what can we do to fix it?  Would it be easier/more efficient to restore the entire server image from a recent backup?  As I say, everything worked fine until yesterday afternoon.  Nothing was added or changed at that time, as far as I can determine.

One more thing.  The workstations do properly set up the mapped drives to the server when they are initially turned on.  I also noticed that the workstations were slightly quicker on the server the first time they accessed it (e.g., changing server directories).

Thanks very much for any assistance anyone can offer.

Storage Pool - unable to remove retired disk - still shows 1.25G used after repair - bad block errors in event log

$

I have a 2TB disk with bad blocks so I retired it.   I've added a 4TB and 6TB usb drives since then.  Unfortunately there is still 1.25G used space on the bad disk.   All attempts to repair the pool do not work.   The event log contains entries for the physical disk stating that it has a bad block.

If I unplug the bad usb disk the storage pool is not accessible.   Plugging in the bad usb disk allows the pool to be online and accessible, although the state is degraded.

I would prefer not to loose the entire storage pool and so have left the bad retired disk plugged in for a few months, but I would really like to pull the disk and rebuilt whatever files are affected by the lost 1.25G.

running chkdsk on the virtualdisk while offline takes over a week and fails on stage4 claiming not enough space, but there is over 4TB available.

Stage 4: Looking for bad clusters in user file data ...
A disk read error occurredc0e7000b
