Media Library on RWA site errorring on Media Library

My Essentials server 2012 R2 has an external raid enclosure that I use for storing my movies and music and Essentials is pointed there to access that content.  When I remote into my Essentials server and login, normally on the right top is a "Media Library" and some boxes with images from the various libraries.  Recently I replaced that enclosure and the associated controller and mirrored all the content and security to the new enclosure and then replaced it.  Everything is working great. Backups are fine, Remote Desktop thru the web interface comes up fine, the Shared Folders are all coming up fine.  Only issue I have on https://<URL>/remote is an error:

Media Library

An unknown error occurred.  Please try again later.  If the problem persists, view Support Information to help resolve this issue at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=298202

Just a general support page and didn't notice anything glaring in the logs.  Any idea what drives that particular "widget" and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Steve

WS2012R2 Essentials - Boot Configuration Data file missing some required information

$

Hi all:
Badly in need of help recovering my WS2012R2E machine.  Without going into a big backstory, I discovered the machine powered off when I could not access shares.  Powered it back on and received an Recovery Message:
-------
Recovery

Your PC needs to be repaired

The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information.

File: \BCD
Error Code: 0x000000d
-----

I booted the DVD media and then attempted to read the backup files off the previously-configured USB backup drive but the system will not see that drive at all.

I tried the following things to fix the BCD/MBR issue:

1)    Boot commands
a.    BCDedit – Errored with “The boot configuration store could not be opened”
b.    Bootrec /Fixmbr & /Fixboot - both came back successful
c.    bootrec /rebuildbcd – gives an error that “The requested system device cannot be found”
d.    BCDBoot c:\Windows  - Errored with “Failure when attempting to copy boot files”
e.    System File Checker (SFC) – Ran that with no problem – I believe it found and repaired an error
2)    Tried using “Startrep.exe”  It ran but could not fix the issue.
3)    Found a tip to run change the MBR Partition to a different letter (Z) then use BCDBoot to run this command “BCDBoot c:\Windows /s z: /f: all”  - This came back successful
4)    BUT… rather than a Error Code: 0x000000d, I now get a Error Code: 0x000000f.

Am thinking of running the following next: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927392

Lastly, my data drives appear to be fine – I read the contents in CMD mode no problem.  Thinking about just copying the data off the drives and then doing a full restore
BUT – seeing as they’re part of a drivepool (4, 2Tb drives)  will I get all the data off safely and intact?

-OR-

Disconnect the drives, doing a full install and then reconnect them –wondering if my data will be readable within the new install….?

I’ll tackle the backup image problem after I get a new reinstall done because apparently there’s something more I need to do THERE…. (Bootable USB?  But I thought WS2012 did all that for you…  ugh)

Can’t lose the data on the data drives…. But I am out of ideas – so any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill.

Win 10 client and WSE2102R2, profile lost when connecting to domain

We've just setup a test WSE2102R2 box to test functionality with Windows 10 client (currently testing with Win 10 Enterprise).

We've got a number of clients running the server and when implementing we use the http://servername/connect to install the client connection software, then use the Client Configuration Wizard to migrate the current user profile across to the new domain account.

This doesn't work on Windows 10 clients.

The http://servername/connect doesn't work, so installed KB2790621 on the machine and ran through the wizards.  Asks the same questions as you'd get on Windows 7, but doesn't migrate the profile across, meaning it's either a manual 3 step process to get the data in there, or set everything up from scratch.

We've got customers running Windows 7 who are asking about Windows 10, and currently we are telling them October at the earliest.  Not sure why the OS doesn't work with one of the best small business products on the market.

WinPE missing

I have been taking regular backups from my Windows 10 Client to a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Server, and now wish to test that I will be able to restore the client should this be necessary in the future.

I have downloaded and installed the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit and chosen to install WinPE. The package installed successfully.

When I now try to create a USB Key from Client Computer Backup Tasks / Tools on the dashboard, I get an error message saying "Cannot Find WINPE on the system.

Any suggestions?

Connecting mac clients to the server 2012 r2 essentials domain

I have a client that runs all mac OS's. Not sure of the exact versions, but they are all fairly new machines. I have read numerous posts about the connector not being able to run successfully, which is a concern of mine, but my main concern is what happens to the local user\admin account (all associated settings\files\etc.) that is currently being used on the mac (not connected to a domain) I have virtually no experience with mac systems at all.  When it successfully joins the domain, you will need to log on with a new domain account I'm assuming, is there a way to copy the settings\files from one account to another?  Any advice, tips, tricks, would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks again in advance.

I have just set up windows server 2012 and have it all up and running.

When I try to connect my main pc to it (Windows 10 home) I go on the site and download the connector but then when i run it it says "an unexpected error has occured. To resulve this issue contact the person responsablf for your network.

I saw a troubleshooting thing about it with the exact error message from microsoft but i did what it said and it did not work and still got the error.

Does anyone know what the error is and / or know how to fix it?

thank you in advanced.

Anywhere Access - domain .ltd.uk causes "The domain name is not valid" error

$

I am trying to configure Anywhere Access on Windows Server 2012 Essentials.

The Anywhere Access wizard asks Do you own a domain name?. When I enter the domain name that I own, something likemycompany.ltd.uk, I get the error message The domain name is not valid. The domain name extension is not valid.

The .ltd.uk domain suffix is a UK-based extension that is reserved for limited companies.

It seems that the domain name validation script running on this page of the wizard doesn't know about this, admittedly not very frequently used, domain suffix. Is there any way to bypass this validation so that I can set up Anywhere Access?

Thanks,

Fred

Windows 10 backup to Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2

Hi,

I have installed the connector (Windows10.0-KB2790621-x64.msu) and I have used the same procedure as before to skip joining domain and also to skip auto dns server detection on the Windows 10 client.

Something is wrong because I am unable to backup the Windows client. The backup fails almost immediately.

The logs on the client, we can find the lines below (excerpt from SharedServiceHost-ClientMgmtServiceConfig.log) which makes me think at first that it was a problem of  certificate and trust between both computers.

However I made further tests. The problem seems to come from the partition on which Windows 10 is installed. Here is the setup. There are 2 SSDs in the computer. The first one had Windows 8.1 and I installed Windows 10 Education on the second one. The first one is partitionned with :

DISKPART> list partition

  N° partition   Type              Taille   Décalage
  -------------  ----------------  -------  --------
  Partition 1    Récupération       300 M   1024 K
  Partition 2    Système            100 M    301 M
  Partition 3    Réservé            128 M    401 M
  Partition 4    Principale         237 G    529 M

(Partition 4 here is mounted as D: drive on Windows 10)

and the second one with :

DISKPART> select disk 1
Le disque 1 est maintenant le disque sélectionné.
DISKPART> list partition

  N° partition   Type              Taille   Décalage
  -------------  ----------------  -------  --------
  Partition 1    Principale         465 G   1024 K

Partition 1 here is C: drive.

I can let Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 backup D: drive, but it fails to backup C: drive.

I must add that I have run 'chkdsk /f' several times on all partitions and there are no errors.

Given the error message below I can see 2 possible reasons :

- ESP partition is too small for the C: drive which is twice as large as the previous D: drive

- C: drive has shadowstorage onto itself as reported by vssadmin and that is not handled properly :

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs>vssadmin list shadowstorage

(Sorry, messages are in French, hope it is readable anyway)

Any idea of what is going wrong by me and how to solve it ?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Fabrice

Unable to access server folder on another server

I am running Server 2012 R2 with essentials experience installed

Remote Web Access to server folders on local drive works fine

I am able to create a server folder on a remote server but and even open it from the dashboard when it is first created but then after a few seconds the status changes to disconnected and I can no longer access it from the dashboard.

From the logs below it seems like some sort of communication issue but everything else is functioning well

Below is from the storageservice.082015 log

Can't download files on Android from Server 2012 Essentials Remote Web Access

I have two servers, one with Windows Server 2012 Essentials, and the other SBS 2011.  Employees like using Remote Web Access to log in from anywhere and have access to shared folders.  It works perfect on a Desktop computer, but when they try to use their Android tablets or phones, and want to download a file (e.g. a PDF) from one of the shared folders on the server, the download fails.   When Microsoft was pushing 2012 they said RWA worked great on mobile devices, do I have to set up something separately to make this happen?

RDSH on Server 2012R2 Essentials experience

Hi,

I have been considering to setup a Server 2012R2 standard with the essentials role. And then install and setup the RDSH role on the same server, but I am not sure if that is supported.

I found a datasheet for server 2012 essentials, where they mention that it isn't supported - but haven't been able to find anything similar for R2 standard with the essentials role.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/4/B/04BD0EB1-42FE-488B-919F-3981EF9B2101/WS2012_Licensing-Pricing_Datasheet.pdf

Anyone that could clarify if it is supported or not?

WES2012 R2 Setup Questions (IP, DHS, DNS)

$

I need some help with IP, DNS and DHCP setting sin my new WES2012R2 home network. If this is not the right place for these types of question please point me in the right direction.

My goal is to make sure that I have the right settings between my BT Home Hub, Router, WES2012R2 server and Windows 10 Client. The settings below don't come from any 'specific knowledge' on my part only from what I have taken from books and numerous posting I have found on web. I have having problems connecting my Windows 10 PC to the domain and I would really like to rule out some incorrect IP, DNS, DHCP or other network related acronym first.

BT Home Hub 5
Purpose
- Provide Wireless Internet Access for Phones, tablets etc...
- Provide Wired Internet Access for WES2012 server and Windows 10 PC
Settings
- Dynamic DNS Disabled
- Hub IP Gateway Address - 192.168.1.254, 255.255.255.0
- DHCP Server Enabled -  192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.253 (Default)
- Firewall option has the current setting (Allow all outgoing connections and block all unsolicited incoming traffic. Games and application sharing is allowed)

Wired Router (Linksys BEFSR81): Wired to BT Home HUb via basic ports, e.g. not WAN or 'Uplink' ports
Purpose
- Provide Wired connections for the WES2012R2 server and Windows 10 PC
Settings
- LAN IP Address - 192.168.1.1, 255.255.255.0
- WAN IP Address - Obtain an IP Address Automatically
- PPPoE - Enabled with User Name and password as that of the BT Home Hub
- DHCP Server - Disabled

WES2012R2 Server: Wired to Router via basic port
Purpose
- Provide home network/domain for Windows 10 PC and 1 or 2 other PCs in future for files sharing, backups etc..
Settings
- IPv4 Address - 192.168.1.2, 255.255.255.0
- Default Gateway Address - 192.168.1.254 (bt home hub)
- DNS server - 192.168.1.254 (bt home hub)

Windows 10 Pro: Wired to Router via basic port
Settings
- IPv4 - Both option to Obtain Automatically

The primary reason I believe these setting might be incorrect is that I can't get my W10 client to connect to WES2012 either via Connector or Manual setting. Another reason is  that I really don't know enough about this stuff to be sure I have made right decision.

Thanks!

Thanks Steve

Remote Web Access: Computers Not Listing New Computers.

I built a new computer with a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro this last week. I connected it to the Windows Server Essentials 2012 server using thehttp://server/connect interface to install the necessary software. It's correctly backing up to the server.

Today I'm remote and wanted to connect to the Anywhere Access interface. The new computer is not listed in the list of computers I can connect to.

I was using remote desktop on the LAN already, so I know that remote desktop on the machine is enabled. It's just that the new computer does not show in the list of possible machines. My list of machines that shows up is quite old, and does not include several machines that have been recently added to the network.

Is there a way to rebuild the list of machines at the server?

Thanks. Wim.

Migrating from SBS 2003 and can't complete configuration....

$

I am in the process of migrating a SBS 2003 network to the Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and seem to be blocked by an issue.  I have followed the migration steps outlined in https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/dn408633.  I completed Step 1 and was in the process of Step 2 (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/dn408637).  I have added the new 2012 server to the existing domain and installed it as a replica domain controller (following https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/JJ574134.aspx). I transferred FSMO roles from the source server.

Instructions under Step 2 (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/dn408637) then advise to confirm that the Windows Server Essentials Experience role is installed (it was previously - I cancelled it as instructed), and found the notification to configure it (as expected.)

When I click to configure, I receive the following message:

Windows Server Essentials can be set up in your environment in different ways.

This server has been set up to a domain member.  Click Configure to set up Windows Server Essentials on the domain member.

The computer name cannnot be changed after the configuration has been done.

I press "Configure" and immediately receive an error:  [red X] Please Click Retry.  If the issue still exists please refer to help link...  The link directs me to this forum.  :)

Any ideas on why Windows Server Essentials can not complete configuration?

Also, I have read the thread at https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/4ca7211b-1402-4699-b137-7acb44fefb1c/migrate-or-start-from-scratch-sbs-2003-r2-to-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials?forum=winserveressentials and feel like I am close on this migration given that the AD replicated successfully and I moved FSMO.   I'd consider shifting to clean install if necessary, but need some advice on migrating profiles in that case.  FYI, no exchange migration from SBS 2003 - we moved to Google Apps years ago so Exchange migration is not a factor.

Thank you!

Configure Windows Server Essentials wizard fails with error 7000: WseMgmtSvc failed to start - Login Failure

I am trying to complete the WSE 2012 R2 port configuration wizard .

1. It fails every time with Error 7000

The Windows Server Essentials Management Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not start due to a logon failure.

2. When I check the service, WseMgmtSvc, I find it Stopped with Log on as: <domain>\ServerAdmin$ and a hidden password.

3. I change Log on as to "Local system account" and start the service.  It starts with no problem, and runs until I try wizard again.

4. I am back at #1, repeating steps 2 and 3 over and over. Running the wizard always results in failure and Log on as resetting to <domain>\ServerAdmin$.   Checking the Registry (RegEdit) I find settings per above, data for Log on as changing as I cycle through the above steps.

I found suggested solutions online:

Unable to start Windows Server Essentials Management Service (WseMgmtSvc) (PwerShell: wbadmin delete catalog) and

KB 2914651The Post-Deployment Configuration task may fail . . .  (editing Domain Group Policy: Logon as a service)

but neither worked.

A resolution to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
