Unable to connect Windows 10 PC to Windows Server Essentials R2

$

I am unable to connect my desktop PC which is running Windows 10 to Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2.

I downloaded and ran the latest patch for the Connecter Wizard -- several times actually. It gives me the sign on page, and after signing on "thinks" for a long time, then gives me a message that says "Cannot connect this computer to the network","The server is not available. Try connecting this computer again.".  I tried signing on both with my administrator ID and my desktop ID, with the same results.

Windows Server is running on an HP ProLiant MicroServer.  I have other systems running Windows 7 and Windows 8 connected in OK.

My desktop, back before I upgraded it from Windows 7 to Windows 10, had successfully been connected to another server running Windows Server 2003, using the same router, etc.  My desktop is able to access all other network resources like stand-alone hard drives, printers, other PC's, etc. with no problems.

I have tried rebooting everything as well, with the same results.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Running Client Connector software from different subnet to Essentials Experience Server.

Afternoon,

I was wondering if you could provide some advice. I am currently planning a project which involves placing a Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 Experience server in Azure to replace an On Premise SBS 2011 server. This would utilise a Site-Site VPN connection to provide connectivity between the Azure VNET and the client site.

My concern is regarding a line in the TechNet pre-requsiites for the Client Connector which states that:

The client computer is on the same IP subnet as the server that is running Windows Server Essentials when the client computer is on the same network as the server.

Obviously the clients and server will not be on the same subnet as this would break the Azure Site-Site VPN, however I have also read that the Client Connector can be run from outside of the Essentials network:

If your computer is at a remote location outside of the Windows Server Essentials network, to run the Connect a Computer to the Server Wizard, typehttp://<domainname>/connect in the address bar of your web browser (where <domain> is the domain name of your organization). You can get your domain name information from your network administrator.

Could anybody clarify exactly how this would work and confirm or deny whether the Client Connector can be run from inside a separate subnet?

Thanks in advance,

David

2012 R2 Essentials O365 Password Sync not working (2 AD servers)

Hi,

As per https://community.office365.com/en-us/f/613/t/294825.aspx

I have Server 2012 Standard with essentials role enabled on one AD server. I have a second AD server in the environment.
Essentials dashboard is telling me to reboot both AD servers as mentioned below (this has been done several times).

I would like to use Essentials dashboard for managing O365, not dirsync.

Please help with correcting the problem

Thanks

How to enable users to access windows 2012 through remote desktop client on windows XP SP3

Hi I have just installed Windows Server 2012 and trying to give access to the users. The users are on windows XP Pro SP3 remote desktop client (Shell and control version 6.1.7600 with Remote Desktop Protocol 7.0 support).

I have enabled the windows server 2012 remote desktop users through "control panel -> systems and security ->  Remote access" for the users. When I try to connect to the windows server as administrator, it is getting connected. But when I try to connect as other users I get the following message.

"To sign in remotely, you need the right to sign in through Remote Desktop Services. By default members of the Administrators group have this right. If the group you're in does not have the right, or  if the right has been removed from the Administrators group, you need to be granted the right manually."

Is there any other setting to be done to eanble the Remote Desktop for the users.

Changing disks around breaks backup and WSE Management service

This is for Server 2012R2 Essentials, specifically, but I didn't see a specific forum for it.

However, every time I add or remove disks (literally EVERY time), it breaks the wbengine service, and therefore the WseMgmtSvc.

Starting the wbengine (server backup) service seems to go fine, but every time you access it (by starting the WseMgmtSvc or running wbadmin.msc), it crashes the service.

Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any good logs for this (aside from the WSE management logs, which accurate report that there is an error.

I know that deleting the catalog (directly via the sys vol info folder, or running "wbadmin delete catalog") fixes the issue, but it requires you to set up the backups again.

This has been an issue since WHS2011/SBS2011E, on multiple different machines I've owned.

I know I've posted about this before, and got a "sorry, we can't reproduce" response from a Microsoft Employee. However, I can reproduce this issue at will, and very very VERY (insert expletive here) reliably.  And giving how easy that I can find results on this topic, I'm clearly not the only one.

Does Microsoft actually have a hotfix for this? Or is just filed into the "not enough people use Essentials for Microsoft to actually care about" bin...

Windows 10 Pro Client Not Applying Domain Policies

$

Hi all.

A little history first...

I upgraded a spare machine from Windows 8.1 Pro x64 to Win10 Preview. From there I upgraded to the final RTM ver.

The Server 2012r2E Client Connector was auto stripped during the upgrade process.

After installing the new client connector, all seemed fine. ( I had been logging into local Admin account  )

I then tried to login with my Domain User account, which it allowed, but none of the Domain Polices applied. ( Folder Re-Direction, Mapped Shares, Roaming Profile, etc. )

This used to work fine under 8.1, but is broken now. Network folder Permissions seem to work fine, and the machine backs up t the server OK. Just domain policies broken.

The only suspect I can think of is the Essentials default WMI filter excluding Windows 10.

Is there any fix for this, I still need to prevent things like Folder Re-Direction from occurring on the servers ( 2012r2E, 2008r2 )

Thanks!

Client (windows 10 pro) default login account issue

Hello all

I have Server 2012 R2 Essentials, and recently upgraded a couple of client computers from 8.1 pro to 10 pro. Both are clean installs.

I used the new connector from here - http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2015/07/23/client-connector-availability-with-windows-home-server-small-business-server-and-windows-server-essentials-for-supported-client-os.aspx to connect them.

One has worked perfectly.

The other has a bizarre issue. Every time it boots, or you try to switch user, or lock (WIN-L) it tries to log in a user called __clientsetup__? on a domain named after the client. It fails. Sometimes it takes two or three minutes to fail.

Typing in <MYDOMAIN>\<REALUSERNAME> gets the real user logged in and all is well.

I cannot find any way to remove the __clientsetup_? user.

It has a users/__clientsetup__? folder but does not exist as a user in the control panel on the client or the server.

It's a pain as it is first in the alphabet, so the first to display and it shunts 'real' users off the list in the bottom left, so I have to keep explaining how to log in. Well, I've stuck a post-it note on the monitor.

Any ideas on how to remove that spurious user?

Essentials is eating up Hard Disk... PartII

I too have Windows 2012 Essentials eating up hard disk.
Yes, I tried chkdsk.
Yes I have tried optimization.

I too, installed WinDir ....    Unfortunately, in this case...  it has found 70-GB of something it can't identify either.  On a C:\  partition of 80GB, it was horrific.

Just a large "blob" ... is can't identify.. and has no extensions assigned to it either.   I am at loss as to where to go.
This is a small server.. and is not really connected to anything but the Internet (yes firewalls are up.)

I finally had to use a third party tool to increase the space. Now at 100GB, and whatever it is, is still consuming about  880MB per day.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Recovering drive from data deduplication on Server Essentials (Error 0x80070780)

$

I have a removable disk drive on which I enabled data de-duplication while running Windows Server 2012 release candidate.   I've since rebuilt the server using Windows Server Essentials 2012 RTM.   When I now plug in the drive and attempt to read files in some folders, I get:

Error 0x80070780: The file cannot be accessed by the system.

I've determined the above error is related to de-duplication having been turned on in the past, and that the feature is not enabled on Windows Server Essentials.   Is there some way to remove the feature from the drive so I can access these files without upgrading to a different version of Server 2012?

Same user, multiple machines question

Just built a new WSE 2012 R2 server.

I'm setting up domain accounts for my small user base.

I have one user who will routinely be using three different PCs, Home, work and laptop.

The Home and Laptop will use VPN and RWA, the work machine is obviously on the LAN. She may be using all three machines at the same time.

For the user with 3 machines, do I set up ONE domain account and she logs into all three computers with that same account, JaneDoe?

Or do I need to set up three separate user accounts for her?

Thanks in advance.

Restricted Mode

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and I have set up a domain network about a few months ago. Now, when I go onto a website like YouTube on Microsoft Edge (as running on Windows 10) - the restricted mode is enabled by default. So I scrolled down to disable it and refreshed the page, the setting has turned back to where it was. So, I am just wondering if there is something like this that you can turn off by the server?

Thanks! :)

Hi,

I have a weird issue when trying to install Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2. After installation and first reboot a window pops-up to configuring Server Essentials 2012 R2. The progress bar goes to 1% and the shows the following message: " An error occurred while configuring Windows Server Essentials. Please try again". So I try again and i'll get the same error message. I checked c:\windows\logs\CBS\CBS.txt but I can't find any error messages. Please some assistants...

migrate SBS 2003 to Server 2012 R2 Essentials

Hi,

I wonder if anyone able to do this migration. I tried following all the Microsoft guides and BPA ran clean from SBS 2003 prior to the migration but I still don't see any way to join the existing domain(SBS 2003) whether using Active Directory Service or Essential Experience role?

Thanks.

Windows SBS 2003 to Server 2012 Essentials R2

I am tasked with upgrading from an existing SBS 2003 server to 2012 R2 Essentials. Currently the 2012 box is on the network, fresh install but I'm encountering issues from there. I joined it to the domain and now when it boots up it goes through the process of configuring it to the domain. However, it simply stops with the error "Configuration Encountered Some Issues". Could someone provide some guidance? Thanks!

The only error I can find related to it is:

Strategies for docked Surface Pro 3 client backup?

$
0
0

Surface Pro 3, when docked, is a full desktop PC replacement in most ways. However, there is one issue I have found troublesome when using Surface with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Client Backup: Connected Standby.

Because Surface uses a sleep system similar to a tablet or smartphone ("Connected Standby"), the normal Windows power management rules apparently don't apply. Most pertinently: requests to keep the machine awake for backups or other long-running operations are ignored, meaning a client backup on the Surface never completes successfully.

It is possible to disable Connected Standby via the registry or indirectly by enabling client Hyper-V, but in that case the "regular" laptop S3 sleep state is not available, only hibernation, which makes using the device as a tablet more unwieldy. It is also possible to change the sleep timeout for AC power to some arbitrarily long time, but I was hoping for a more elegant solution.

I realize this is a Surface Pro 3 issue, but I can't be the only one trying to backup Surface Pro 3 using Windows Server. Does anyone have any experience or advice on how they've handled this?

Server Certificate Revoked Message when using "personal domain name from Microsoft"

Hello,

We are getting an error after following Anywhere Access wizard.

We setup the server with a name like: name.remotewebaccess.com

When we browse for the server at https:name.remotewebaccess.com  we get the error is that the Server Certificate has been revoked.

However, we when I unselect the "Check for server certificate revocation" option in Internet Explorer we can access the server perfectly.

Is there a setting we can make on the server so that we don't have to instruct all the users to unselect the check for server certificate revocation setting?

Thanks very much in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Anywhere Access - One User Failing

One single user, that was working previously, is no longer able to connect via anywhere access.

  1. I have tested their password, works correctly
  2. I can log in to the Remote Web Workspace with the username and password
  3. Other users including new users can connect to the VPN via Anywhere access
  4. The problem is not machine specific

The server is running 2012 R1 essentials.  As I had mentioned it worked previously. I have

  1. Server is updated and rebooted
  2. I have turned off and back on in the Essentials Dashboard, the users account to access it
  3. I have tested this on multiple machines

Any Ideas are appreciated?
