Unable to set up Office 365 integration on Windows Server essentials 2012 R2 Essentials

I am trying to integrate our Office 365 with a newly installed instance of Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2.

When i run the integration wizard in the Windows server essentials dashboard and supply my username and password for my Office 365 admin account, the wizard runs for a very long time, and returns "An unknown error occurred. Make sure that the computer is connected to the internet, and the try again. If you continue to to experience, restart the server and then try again".

I have tried to restart the server several times and reinstalling the server from scratch, but the error still appears.

When i try to integrate the server with another, separate trial Office 365 tenant, I am able to integrate, but when I try to integrate with this Office 365 tenant, the wizard always returns this error. This leads me to think that there is a problem with this specific Office 365 tenant.

We need this integration to work, and hope that you will be able to help us fix this error and get the integration with our server to work.

Admin Account Setup as Part of Wizard Count Against 25 Users?

Just installed Windows Server 2012 R2 and was wondering if the New Admin Account created as part of the setup wizzard counts against the 25 users?  If so, during the wizard setup can you use one of the domain users' accounts for the purposes of Admin and be able to assign that account a Microsoft Online Account?

Anywhere Access (Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials)

I am need some help. I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server at my house. Currently I am trying to setup Anywhere Access, but I have issues. First, the router that I got from my ISP doesn't have UPnP, so I have to do port forwarding.

1. Which ports need to be opened? Ive tried opening ports 80, 443, 1723, and I still get any error when setting up UPnP (done this several times).

Is there anything that I have missed that I don't know about? Needing a fresh pair of eyes. Are there any other ports that I need to open and forward them to my server? Would i have to doing anything on the advanced firewall settings on the server?

Thank you,

David Marks

Storage spaces can only use whole drives

One of the features that I was really interested in with WS2012E is storage spaces as it replaces the old driver extender of WHS v1. Having now installed WS2012E onto my WHS2011 box I am bit staggered to find that it can only use whole drives. My box came with 2 * 2Tb drives, the first partitioned as boot, then a 60G of OS followed by the rest allocated as storage. I have successfully created a Storage space pool of the second drive but cannot find any way to add the remaining storage from the large partition on the other drive into the pool. As the UI just shows me drives rather than partitions, I am bit challenged. I thought that storage spaces was meant to be flexible about adding drives just like the old drive extender. Even add on technolgies like DriveBender for WHS2011 allows for a storage space to be made up from this type of set up. So we seem to be going backwards.

Plus when creating the drive pool it defaulted on a 2Tb drive to a 2Gb size! How useful is that? As soon as I started copying data to the drive it ran out of space. I then had to go in and expand it.

[Forum FAQ] Introduce the Windows Essentials Connector software and checklist for its configuration issues

Introduction

The Connector software for the Windows Server Essentials OS connects the computers in your network to the Windows Server Essentials server. When you connect computers to the server via Connector software, it will help you to automatically back up the computers and monitor their health. Meanwhile, you will be able to configure and remotely administer the Windows Server Essentials server. The Connector software is installed when you connect a client computer to the server. You can start by typing http://<your_server_name>/connect

Example: Windows 8.1 connects to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

1. Open the Dashboard on Windows Server 2012 Essentials, navigate to USERS tab. Right click and select Add a user account (Figure 1). Then follow the Add a User Account wizard to configure and add the user account (Figure 2).

Figure 1: Add a user account -1

Figure 2: Add a user account -2

2. Logon the client computer, type the http://<your_server_name>/connect in IE. Then you will see the download page for Connector software (Figure 3).

Figure 3Download the Connector software

3. Click Download software for Windows and download the Connect software (ComputerConnector), then run it.

After restart automatically, please follow the Windows Server Essentials Connector Configuration Wizard (Figure 4 – Figure 7).

Figure 4: Windows Server Essentials Connector Configuration Wizard -1

Figure 5: Windows Server Essentials Connector Configuration Wizard -2

4. When complete the configuration wizard and logon the client computer, you will be able to use the Launchpad (Figure 8).

Figure 8: Launchpad

5. Meanwhile, when you open Dashboard, will be able to find that the Windows 8.1 is listed under DEVICES. It will help administrators to manage the client computer (Figure 9).

Figure 9: Clients listed in the Devices panel

For Windows XP

You can type http://<your_server_name>/connect in IE. Then the download page will appear (Figure 10).

Figure 10: Download page

However, it will encounter the error: “xxx.exe is not a valid Win32 application” (Figure 11).

Windows XP is not a supported OS for client computer. For more details, please refer toGet Connected in Windows Server Essentials.

In addition, please note:Microsoft ended support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. This change has affected your software updates and security options.

Multiple Servers Possible

Can Multiple Windows Server 2012 Essentials be run in a Domain with one being a Domain Controller and the others being member of the domain?

I need to replace a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller with Active Directory and was planning on doing it with a Windows Server 2012 Essentials. I also have a Windows Server 2008 that is a member of the domain that has our accounting software on it. Outside users log in to it via a VPN Connection and use the Domain Controller to Validate them, ie: domain_name\user_name.

I also need to update our Imaging Computer and wanted to run it on a Server Operating System as well and was going to use a second Windows Server 2012 Essentials to replace the Windows XP software that it runs on now.

Is it possible to do the above with the 2012 Essentials Version or do I need to use a different version of Windows Server 2012?

What is the best option to add an 2nd DC to 2012 R2 Essentials domain

Going to start a new domain with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials at the main office and want to add a 2nd DC at a branch office, which will also do DFS between the two offices. What server option is the best to put in the branch office to allow that server to be a 2nd DC and do DFS?

Can I add a 2nd 2012 R2 Essentials box and have it as a 2nd DC? (My guess is probably not)

If I add a Server 2012 R2 Std box at the branch office, can it be a 2nd DC leaving the R2 Essentials box be the primary.  If so, what about licensing?  will the embedded 25 user CALs of the Essentials OS carry over to this member server?

windows server 2012 essentials install error

I am attempting to install Windows Server 2012 Essentials which will be used as a domain controller. So at the point in the installation when asked about fresh install I select that option. I answer:

  1. Date, Time, TZ etc
  2. Company name
  3. Domain name RPA
  4. Computer Name
  5. Administrator Account username
  6. Administrator account user password: 13 characters, mixture of upper, lower case, numbers and special characters. Confirm
  7. Standard user username
  8. Standard user password: 13 characters, mixture of upper, lower case, numbers and special characters. Confirm
  9. The install continues, reboots and I can see the DNS Icon appear on the screen, then it continues to the installation screen
  10. Progress bar continues to move across the screen.

When the progress bar gets to approximately 89%, it remains there for quite some time, then I get the screen that states:

"AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED WHILE SETTING UP YOUR SERVER.

IF YOU PURCHASED YOUR SERVER FROM A HARDWARE MANUFACTURER, CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER FOR SUPPORT

TO SAVE THE ERROR LOGS, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU SELECT A FOLDER ON A REMOVABLE MEDIA SUCH AS A USB FLASH DRIVE SO THAT YOU CAN ACCESS YOUR FILES FROM ANOTHER COMPUTER."

I have searched high and low for the reason and cannot figure it out. I have the log files. Please let me know to whom to share them with.

Thank you

How do you manually import and existing user and/or computer in to the Server Essentials 2012 R2 dashboard?

I found some instructions stating the following:

To manually import user names into the Dashboard

  1. On the Destination Server, open a Command Prompt window as an administrator. For more information, see To open a Command Prompt window as an Administrator.

  2. Type cd “\Program Files\Windows Server\Bin”, and press ENTER.

  3. Type WssPowerShell.exe, and then press ENTER.

  4. Type Import-WssUser –Name <username>, and then press ENTER.

  5. Repeat the previous step for each user name that you want to import into the Dashboard.

However this file does not exist on the WSE 2012 R2 install.

Thanks.

Unable to start Windows Server Essentials Management Service (WseMgmtSvc)

Earlier this week, I did a clean install of Windows Server R2 Essentials.  Before performing any setup functions, I installed all of the updates that Windows Update provided.  Now, I am unable to perform any of the Setup functions from the Dashboard.  Each link fails with a different error message.

The probable cause, IMHO, is that the Windows Server Essentials Management Service is not running and can not be forced to start. I get the message "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly".   Can any one help?

Thanks,

Phil

Sharepoint sync with Essentials 2012

Hi guys,

Got a client who (despite what we say) wants to go with Essentials 2012. We opted for a fully offsite solution like 365.

I know there's integration with 2012 and 365 (using DirSync in the backend?) but what I would like to know is if there's a way that 2012 can Sync with 365 SharePoint and be used as a mapped network drive?

Also, is there still a 8GB Sync limit with sharepoint? or is it just limited my the number of files now?

Any help appreciated.

Downgrade rights

Hi, my question should have a simple answer.

I have a Windows SBS 2012 Essentials server at a customer site that they purchased with bad advice - they really need Exchange in a single server environment - so I intend to downgrade them.  The only media and keys I have are for SBS 2011 Standard.

So my question is, can I downgrade to SBS 2011 Standard (from SBS 2012 Essentials)?

I guess a secondary question would be, if I can't, where can I obtain media and key for SBS 2011 Essentials (not to activate the key, just to install and then telephone activate with the 2012 Essentials key)

Many thanks!

Max

Access Database (.mdb) on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

Hi guys, thanks for your time!

SCENARIO:
- Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials
- Windows 7 Ultimate Clients (3 clients)
- VB6 application on clients using a MS Database (.mdb) hosted on the server.
- Clients access the database (.mdb) via a mapped network drive (K:).

PROBLEM:
- Microsoft Database (.mdb) on server gets corrupted frequently.
- Clients don't "flush their changes" back to the database: database was not updated.

WORKAROUND:
- Database was moved from the server to one of the Windows 7 clients.
- Application is running OK.

CONFIGURATION:
- Permissions are correct: network and NTFS.
- No faulty network hardware: switch, cabling, NICs.
- Computers and Server hardware is new.
- UPS are used everywhere.

SOME LINKS:
- SMB 3.0
Opportunistic Locking and Read Caching on Microsoft Windows Networks.
- Windows 7 cannot open the shared MS Access database if it's opened by another user
- Initializing the Microsoft Jet 4.0 Database Engine Driver
- Moved to Server 2012 getting Access Database Corruption
- Oplocks
Configuring opportunistic locking in Windows
Understanding offline files
-
How to enable and disable SMBv1, SMBv2, and SMBv3
- Is it possible to monitor and log actual queries against an Access MDB?

Now, server is useless if it is not hosting our database. Any ideas, please? Do I need to diagnose using Wireshark? Or using Sysinternals Process Monitor? I think that is a waste of time.

Thank you!

WSE R2 with Windows Account screwiness

I am experiencing the same frustrating issue on all of my domain connected pc's.  Each of the Win 8.1 pc's default to the local Microsoft account and not to the domain account which has a completely different background, taskbar, start menu, etc, meaning there are basically 2 different accounts on each pc, one domain connected and the other the standard windows login.  Each time we log out, hitting the picture with the account defaults to the standard windows login, not the domain account that we use 100% of the time.

Is there a way to hide completely the standard microsoft login or default to the domain login every time?

Error 720

I have setup a windows 2012 r2 essentials on azure following Microsoft documentation.  I am at the point of connecting remote workstation to the server.  I can connect to the web addresshttps://xxxxxx.remotewebaccess.com without issue.  I can download the client fromhttps://xxxxxx.remotewebaccess.com/connect with a problem.  However, connecting via anywhere access is a problem.  I keep getting the error message:

"Error 720: a connection to the remote computer could not be established.  You might need to change the network settings for this connection."

On the Essentials server I get the following error in the event logs when I try to connect:

RoutingDomainID- {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}: CoId={BC6477AD-E47E-40E3-AB43-01DD9056FCC1}: The user DOMAIN\user connected to port VPN1-127 has been disconnected because no network protocols were successfully negotiated.

What am I missing?

Thanks

Remoteweb access to computers via RDP. Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer that you want to connect to.

Hello,

I try to use the published Remote web access page on the essentials server, from "Internet".
When i click Connect on one of the computers in the remoteweb portal, i fill in the domain\username and password, i get a Do you trust this publisher, press connect, and gets the "Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer that you want to connect to." This occurs with a win 7 client with 6.3.9600 RDP 8.1 client.
Same problem from "internet" with W2008 R2 with 6.3.9600 RDP 8.1 client

But when i try this from "internet" on a w2003 6.0.6001 RDP 6.1 client it works.

When I try from the Essentials server itself using its own webpage, I click connect, I get the Auth req, fill in password, and then gets The logon attempt failed. Perhaps not relevant, I wouldn't use it from there, but add it here as information.

When I try from the internal net (to the remoteweb access page and connect) on a win 7 client with 6.2.9800 RDP 8.0 i can connect too.

It seems as when i connect from Internet with a new RDP client it doesnt work, but from the internal network it does, and with the old rdp client i can connect from Internet. If they are using different auth methods, how can i enable the RDP 8.1 auth method over RD gateway?

I have some error in the event-log on the computer i try to connect, Event id 9009 and "The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0xd00002fe)"
