I have a customer running a windows server 2003 R2 domain.  I am planning to replace the 2003 r2 domain controller with a windows 2012 r2 essentials domain controller.  I have looked through a number of articles but non seem to be for this specific scenario.  Is there an article that addresses this type of migration?

Thanks

What Office 365 plans can be integrated into Server 2012 R2 Essentials edition?

Is the integration limited to small business plans or can you integrate midsize and enterprise plans?

Failed feature removal

In attempt to repair my RDS Web server I tried to uninstall that component. When I did I, got an error 0x800F0922, and it did not uninstall. I am prevented from re-installing it because it is still on the computer.

The back story is I installed the Lync Webapps server, and a step in that process removed all pools and sites. I in one step lost all the webpages I had on the machine, most of the sites I knew which pool to add them back to and where to find the root folders. How ever I have no idea where/how the RDWeb services are located.

Client Backup Failing reporting issue with Windows Server Essentials Client Computer Management Service

I've been using WS2012R2 for quite some time now without issue for a storage server as well as a backup server.  Just recently, I've had some issues when trying to backup one of the client computers (which has been working without issue for months).  Automated backups have failed daily and when I try to run a manual backup I get the following error...

"Backup cannot connect to the Windows Server Essentials Client Computer Management Service on your network computer.  If this problem persists, you may be able to resolve the issue by restarting the client computer"

Now I've tried the suggestion to reboot and of course that doesn't work.  I've also looked at the services on the client computer and it's not started but "manual", however this looks the same as my other client computers that successfully backup each day.  I've googled the issue with out success so I thought I'd check with the experts here.  Any ideas what could be going wrong?

Local Computer Account VPN Access

I am trying to setup VPN access from the public internet to a user specific shared folder on an ad Windows Server 2012 server. It is necessary that I use local accounts on the server to access the folder. Will VPN access from a public network to an ad Windows Server 2012 server allow a local account account on the server to login and access a folder specifically shared to that account?

Used to work now all of a sudden Remote web access is giving 404 File not Found

I have a Windows Server 2012 Essentials server that I manage remotely and just out of the blue (5/4/2014) I can't connect to it. The server is running fine (serving files, doing backups etc) but I can't remotely connect to it anymore. I get a 404 File not found error. I'm wondering if some automatic update/patch killed it. Anyway, I'll be in front of it next week and take a closer look but thought I'd check to see if anyone else here noticed something similar.

Cannot get Windows 7 to connect to 2012 R2 Essentials

I just built a new server with 2012 R2 and Essentials role installed.  I previously had 2012 non-R2 Essentials and all my client PC's were connected.  I have been able to connect one Windows 7 Ultimate x64 laptop to the new server with no hiccups. Before attempting to connect, I uninstalled the old connector, joined back to WORKGROUP, and removed the Logs folder from the ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server directory.  Now when I attempt to join the other Windows 7 Ultimate x64 PC to the server, the install fails saying "Package Installation did not succeed".  I have installed every available update to both the server and the client.  I have even tried to install it in a "clean boot" state, which also gave the same error.  I have tried disabling the AV, and still no-go.  I tried to install the KB2790621 independently, and it will not install.  I have rebooted both machines several times, always the same error.  I have also looked at the server event log and don't see any clues.  I'm out of ideas.  Below is what I copied from the logs, but don't see anything pointing me in another direction.

Server 2012 Standard R2, Windows Essentials Experience, Hyper V, Exchange 2013 on HyperV

How do you configure to allow Exchange 443 mapped to HyperV and sstp 443 mapped to Host? Can you change either port? Or is there another way?

ARR3.0 vs ARR 2.5

I just transitioned my network from Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Windows Server 2012 r2 Essentials. While following the directions to integrate my email system back into the environment I accidentally installed ARR 3.0 instead of 2.5.

My questions are:

1. Can I install both versions in tandem, or is there a way to uninstall 3.0 and install 2.5?

2. If I cannot install 3.0 then what steps must I take to get reverse proxy working correctly as it should so my users can access their email through the mail.mynetwork.net link they are configured for?

3. Am I totally hosed here?

Thanks in advance for your assistance and attention.

Increasing the size of my storage Pool

A year ago I moved from Windows Home Server to Server Essentials 2012 as a backup solution for my simple home configuration - 2 Windows 7 Professional desktops.  It was a perfect solution and works flawlessly - and has saved my tail on numerous occasions.

The configuration is simple - I have a internal SSD drive from the operating system and a few other applications and (2) identical 2 Terabyte internal hard drives setup as a single storage pool - configured as a 2 way mirror.  Here is my question (apologies if too newbie for this forum).  I want to increase the size of my storage pool by removing the 2 Terabyte drives and replacing them with 4 Terabyte drives.  In order to preserve the backups (which are the only data related items in the pool), I was thinking I could do something like this:

  1. Remove (1) 2TB drive from the storage pool - because it's setup as a 2 way mirror, the data should still be 100% intact
  2. Replace the 2TB drive with a 4TB drive, add to the storage pool, and wait for the mirroring to "build" the 4 TB drive up with all the data in the pool
  3. After a few hours - I would assume the 4TB drive would contain a mirror copy of the pool
  4. Remove the other 2TB drive from the storage pool and replace with the second 4TB drive

After a few hours, my original pool of (2) 2TB drives would be 100% replaced with (2) 4TB drives.  Would this scenario work?  I'm typically very good with MS products, but not a server admin and can't seem to find an answer to this in any of these MS forums.

Connector Installation Issues

Hi, I recently installed Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 in a workgroup environment without issue and am trying to get the connector software working on all my clients. I had a 2011 server that ended up having some permissions/access issues and the connector software I used had issues. With uninstalling the old connector software on my MAC I was able to install the connector software but I am not able to uninstall and get working on a 8.1 machine.

The error message I receive is cannot connect this computer to the network

The server is not available. Try connection this computer again, or for more information, see Troubleshoot connecting computers to the server.

I've seen a couple steps of actions I could take including verifying local certificate, pointing DNS to server rather than router, and running a script to verify IIS but wanted to check with the community to see if they read this log as a DNS issue?

Thanks in advance!

One or more hard drives in Server Backup are not connected

A year ago I moved from Windows Home Server to Server Essentials 2012 as a backup solution for my simple home configuration - 2 Windows 7 Professional desktops.  It was a perfect solution and works flawlessly - and has saved my tail on numerous occasions.

The configuration is simple - I have a internal SSD drive from the operating system and a few other applications and (2) identical 4 Terabyte internal hard drives setup as a single storage pool - configured as a 2 way mirror.  Every few days when I log into the Windows Dashboard and check out the alert viewer, I have a single error - "One or more hard drives in Server Backup are not connected".  When I follow the instructions - open the dashboard, click storage, hard drives - I see a single C drive (which of course is connected - it runs the OS) and a single D drive - the storage pool.  Clicking on the D drive and "Advanced - Manage Storage Spaces" shows my single pool (a green OK) and the 2 physical drives (also a green OK).

There are no other drives attached to this server - no external USB drives, external hard drives - nothing.  Why is WSE showing this message?

Secondary 2012 DC and backup?

I have a home network with Windows Essentials 2012 R2 as my primary domain controller.  I have just setup a secondary DC and it's up and running.  So because it was added as a DC it's now part of the domain, but not thru using the <a href="http:///connect">http://<server_name>/connect method.  is there a way to all the primary domain controller (essentials) to backup the secondary domain controller?  If so how since it's already "on the domain" but not thru the usual method a client would get there?

Thanks.

Steve

Help needed with server essentials 2012 R2 client backup failing

Help please.  I have installed WSE 2012 R2 on a new Lenovo TS140, everything seems to be working fine (I can map drives, browse folders, copy files back and forth to clients, run the server through dashboard from a client, run the server through remote desktop from a client, use remotewebaccess etc.  But I can't get ANY of my clients to backup to the server.  The connector finds the server, installs on the client and the launchpad runs and says 'connected to server', but when I try to run the backup, it fails after about 30 seconds and says "can't connect to server"...  This is all the same on clients that are Win 7 Home, Win 7 Pro, Win 8.1 pro and win 8.1 home, wired and wireless...  Have spent about a week researching, clean reinstalling, examining router config etc... no luck.  Any thoughts or direction for help appreciated.  I'm not using storage spaces, and have run drive scans which all show healthy drives (1 SDD - OS, and separate HDs for files and backups...

Unable to restart Client Restore Service after updating Windows ADK for 8.1 Update

Hi,

since I've updated Windows ADK for 8.1 Update, I'm unable to restart the service on my Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 with Update 1.  Every time I click on it, it says "Customizing WinPE image..." then after about 30 seconds, I get the error (translated from french... sorry) " The client restore service installation has failed. Unable tocustomize therecovery image of the client.Thespecified image file did not contain aresourcesection." I uninstalled ADK, reinstalled it, nothing works.

Any ideas?

Best regards,

Tommy

Remote Web Access using "UPN" or Email address

Hi there,

I noticed this thread talks about the thing I would love to have.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/4192a34b-d399-4aa4-8ee2-dc6a327cb952/server-error-in-remote-application-using-upn-to-log-on?forum=smallbusinessserver

I understand the SBS is designed for smaller, non-it specific, however most of the places that you do install are also limited so telling the when you use the RWA you use the "username" but when you log into Office365, you use your email address, it would be nice to have them all the same.

I see that from here you are able to modify the RDWeb.

http://msfreaks.wordpress.com/2013/12/29/step-by-step-customizing-rd-web-access-2012-r2/

But I understand that the Essentials is an out of the box solution, so maybe nobody has wanted to try or to fix.

The first post mentions about a "Error" with RWA in 2011 and they still haven't found something for this?  As they did mention about looking into it, however, no solution, so I can't be the only person asking for this feature of consistency, as I know there are other out there.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how to enable this?   I swear that my Server Essentials 2012 this worked, as I tested it, so not sure what happen in R2.

Kevin
