Remote Desktop to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials from Mac

Hi,

I would like to be able to administer a 2012 R2 Essentials server remotely from a Mac, running OS X Yosemite.

I've set up AnywhereAccess and Remote Web Access on the server, and the RWA interface works great. And I've installed the OS X version of Microsoft Remote Desktop on my Mac. While I'm able to remote onto domain client machines (the 2012 Essentials machine is an AD DC), I can't remote onto the server. When I attempt to log on with the domain admin account, it asks for a "smart card," which I don't have, so I took the advice of some other forum threads and simply selected "other user" and entered the credentials for the domain admin account. When I do that, it appears to work for a moment, but then the windows goes black and closes (on the server, though, it shows that the account is still logged on but "disconnected").

Can anybody offer any information as to what might be the cause and perhaps how to solve it?

Thanks very much.
