Access Database (.mdb) on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

$

Hi guys, thanks for your time!

SCENARIO:
- Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials
- Windows 7 Ultimate Clients (3 clients)
- VB6 application on clients using a MS Database (.mdb) hosted on the server.
- Clients access the database (.mdb) via a mapped network drive (K:).

PROBLEM:
- Microsoft Database (.mdb) on server gets corrupted frequently.
- Clients don't "flush their changes" back to the database: database was not updated.

WORKAROUND:
- Database was moved from the server to one of the Windows 7 clients.
- Application is running OK.

CONFIGURATION:
- Permissions are correct: network and NTFS.
- No faulty network hardware: switch, cabling, NICs.
- Computers and Server hardware is new.
- UPS are used everywhere.

SOME LINKS:
- SMB 3.0
Opportunistic Locking and Read Caching on Microsoft Windows Networks.
- Windows 7 cannot open the shared MS Access database if it's opened by another user
- Initializing the Microsoft Jet 4.0 Database Engine Driver
- Moved to Server 2012 getting Access Database Corruption
- Oplocks
Configuring opportunistic locking in Windows
Understanding offline files
-
How to enable and disable SMBv1, SMBv2, and SMBv3
- Is it possible to monitor and log actual queries against an Access MDB?

Now, server is useless if it is not hosting our database. Any ideas, please? Do I need to diagnose using Wireshark? Or using Sysinternals Process Monitor? I think that is a waste of time.

Thank you!

Error using connector software.. "Server not available, try again later"

I am trying to join a Surface Book to my Domain and this is the error message that results. What does this mean?

Server Backup is running out of disk space and failing; why no overwrite?

I am running Windows Server 2012 Essentials. (Note: not R2). I have a backup drive connected for server backup that is 3Tb.

On 7/13 I got a alert "Free space is low in Server Backup".  The text of the alert says "If you ignore this alert, the old backups on the backup disk will be overwritten by the new backups".  This is fine with me, so I ignored the alert.

So, last night, 7/17, I get an error "A scheduled backup did not finish successfully".  The text of the alert: "The scheduled backup did not finish successfully and returned the following error code: 2155348326 Windows Backup encountered an error when writing data to the backup target. Detailed error: There is not enough space on the disk".

The backup disk is indeed full.

So, I am confused.  Why didn't the latest backup overwrite as promised?  Is there any way to get backups to overwrite?  I just want to keep recent backups.

This error has always happened whenever the server backup disk gets full.

Restore Client files from OLD Backup

Is it possible to restore some client computer files from an old WSE2012 backup? If so, how?

I recently migrated from WSE2012 to R2 and set up client computer backups on a new external usb 3.0 hard drive, retaining my OLD WSE2012 backups on a separate external drive. After setting up R2 and manually adding all of my user accounts, I realized that there were some client files that I needed to recover (in particular, the previous Microsoft Outlook ".pst" files on the client computers). Is it possible to restore these files from my OLD external backup drive which, of course, does not appear in the list of recoverable files? Is there any way to "add" those backups?? It's hard for me to believe that there is no way to do this but I have not been able to find any information about this while searching the internet thoroughly over the past month or more. I can take that external drive and attach it to my Win8.1 laptop, mount it as a drive letter and see all the backup files BUT... How do I access (and hopefully restore) any of them?

Any help would greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Server 2012 R2 Essentials - RWA - Microsoft Domain - Certificate Has Been Revoked

Hi All,

RWA was setup and working fine using a free <custom>.remotewebaccess.com domain from Microsoft.   Then it just stopped working.  I was able to use repair and it claims to be successful but when I go to our domain I receive a warning in the browser that the certificate has been revoked?

How do I force the RWA Wizard to get a new MS provided certificate to replace the MS one that seems to have been revoked?

Also any idea why or how one of these free MS certs would get revoked?

Thanks for the help!

Server detecting "false" windows updates in client machines?

$

I have had my server now for about 3 years. All my PC/laptops are all windows 10. No real issues except ...

  • Recently two of the client machines have started reporting that updates need to be installed, or this is what the alerts are telling me on the launchpad.
  • If I go onto the client machine and run windows update it shows nothing is in need of being updated and the alert disappears
  • Below is from the NetworkHealthPlugin-DeviceProviderReporting.log file on the client machine. Clearly shows an expected windows update, after running windows update and refreshing alert, no updates are shown!!!!!
  • No changes to either machine, nothing different about the machines that see this behavior. It is however always teh same two machines.

Any ideas or more logs I can look at are appreciated? This only happens on two of my five client machines

VPN to local home network, can't see other computers on network (workgroup)

$

I am not sure how if this is supposed to work or not, but I figure I would ask the experts.

I have Win Server 2012 Essentials (for simplicty we can call it ZZZ) running on my home local network. On the home network I have a desktop computer (XXX) running win10 and a tv-receiver (YYY). I also have a laptop running win10 (let's call it QQQ) that is on the network when at home. Note the devices are connected through workgroup and not domain!

When at home all these computers can be seen under the network in explorer and I can browse their shared folders without a problem.

Now when I'm away with my laptop I connect remotely with VPN to my server through SSTP.

Question: Am I supposed to be able to see the other computers on my home local network under network when connected through the VPN? Because I'm not...

I can connect to my server though if I use:  \\ZZZ               or     \\ip-of-server    in the explorer, but I can't see ZZZ listed under computers in the network like I can do if I'm on the local network.

Additionaly, I cannot connect to the TV-receiver if I try  \\YYY           BUT it works if I use the actual ip of it        \\ip-of-tv-receiver . Which seems weird that it differs from the connection of the server. There doesn't seem to be any consistency in it.

I've made sure that all advanced sharing options are enabled on both server and client.

Is there any settings for the ipv4 with the VPN-connection? Under advanced settings TCP/IP for ipv4 I have this right now:

right now "use standard gateway on remote network" is enabled (checked)

Under DNS tab nothing is enabled.

Under WINS tab "activate NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is enabled.

Any thoughts? :)

I installed KB3172614 in my WIndows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Server, and I reinstalled client connector on my Windows 10 Client.

After that, It seems like EssentialsTrayApp doesn't working.
Essentials Tray App is not shown in tasktray on my Windows 10 computer.

I found these error records in EssentialsTrayApp-<SID>.log file.

I am having the issue of Windows Server 2012 r2 Essentials not able integrate though the Dashboard under Services tab. It keeps showing a (N/A) for Integrate with Microsoft Azure Directory and Integrate with Microsoft Office 365.   This is a new server and a fresh install of the OS. Here is a powershell using the administrator and global administrator login for office365 license error I was getting:

Error 403 Forbidden: Access is denied when attempting to connect new client

I have a Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 with 8 client computers running Windows 7 SP1 that have been apparently functioning well for 2 years. Recently I attempted to upgrade one client to Windows 10. I removed the client from the server’s device page in Dashboard before doing so. All went well until I ran connect computer from the client when the upgrade was complete. Http ://[server]/Connect gave the error  “403 – Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.” I tried https and managed to download the Connector software but once it installed the “Connect to Windows Server Essentials” window gave the error “Cannot get information from SERVER. Please contact your server administrator.” These errors have continued to occur even after rolling back to Win 7, and after a clean install. I tried connecting a laptop (running Windows 10) to the server as well with the same result. It seems the error is on the server. I checked the Connector log files on the client and it indicates a failure trying to connect via http.
I have Googled the problem and have checked the security certificates on the server, synchronized the time, disabled the anti-virus and other third party programs without success.

WSE 2012R2 Connector to Windows10

$

As far as I can see there are still difficulties between WSE 2012R2 and the connector to Windows 10 operating systems.  To-date, we've held off taking the free update to Windows 10 for that reason.  We are a small shop, and don't have resources for heavy debugging of a problem that seems to be MS's court. The basic problem as I understand it, is although the initial connection to the server works, the connection is lost sometimes when the Windows10 client receives an upgrade.

I'd appreciate getting feedback on the successes failures of marrying WSE 2012R2 to Windows 10 clients.  While I'd be happy to step up to Windows 10, even more I want a stable system.  Those who have made the leap or tried to, your helpful input will be very much appreciated.  I do not have strong computer infrastructure experience, am volunteering for a non-profit, and can use all the help I can get.

At this writing, the deadline for accepting the upgrade is about a week away.

Thanks

Problems joining Windows 10 client

I bought a new CNC machine, so need a computer to drive it.  Dusted off one of my laptops that has been out of the loop for a year or so and ran it up.  It is a Thinkpad X220, more than enough machine to drive the CNC cutter.

I did not want the Leveno junk on there for a dedicated machine so did a clean install of Windows 10.  Everything went fine.

Then I went to join it to the domain, everything did not go fine.

Created new user on the Windows Server 2012 Essentials Dashboard.

Tried just using the Join Domain from the Settings/Accounts/Work Access/Join Org

That allowed me to access all the folders and what not from the client to the server.  But on looking at the Dashboard the computer was not shown.  Odd.  Did some poking about and see the computer listed under Active Directory Users and Computers / Computers, but with no description.

Read a lot of posts about this and that, tried a few things here and there, managed to fix a couple of nagging but not critical errors on the server.  But did not manage to get the computer to show in the Dashboard.

Rebooted server, rebooted client about 200 times.

Since this was a fresh windows 10 install thought to start again.  Did new fresh install of the OS on the client.

This time I opened the server web page (it lists the connector for Windows 7 and 8 there), download the connector, run the server connector.  Connector wizard can not find the server automatically.  Write in the Servername.local wizard progresses a few steps more and then poof gone.  Look at Dashboard, no new client computer listed.  Run connector wizard again, this time try the DNS address of the server, wizard progresses a few steps then poof.  Same as before.

Hmmm, getting irritated.  Reinstall client OS again.  This time try the Windows Server 2012 R2 connector.  That fails with a note that this is for a different OS on the server side.  Fair enough.  Go through the Join Domain from the Settings/Accounts/Work Access/Join Org

So the computer is again listed under Active Directory Users and Computers / Computers, but with no description.

It is not showing on the dashboard.  I want it there so I can set up backup and what not.  I want this done before I start installing all the drivers and Gcode programs to run the machine.

Windows 2012 essentials server, base language is in Japanese.  I am using this as a file repository for my office and running an SQL database from it.

Server is configured with 6 X 2TB hdd and a single 2TB for the root drive.  Hardly using any of this.  Lots of space left.  MB is a Supermicro X9SAE.  OS Version is 6.2.9200 build 9200, 8GB of ram.  Not running any virtual machines.  All updates installed.

Laptop is Thinkpad X220, base language is Japanese, installed windows 10 and English language.  4GB of Ram, 500 or so GB HDD.  Nothing special.  DNS is pointing at the server already.

If anyone wants to have a lot of fun try getting a Japanese computer to change language.  MS seems to have made this particularly non-intuitive.

If anyone has any ideas what I am doing wrong please let me know.  Willing to try most anything legal.....

Unable to start Windows Server Essentials Management Service (WseMgmtSvc)

Earlier this week, I did a clean install of Windows Server R2 Essentials.  Before performing any setup functions, I installed all of the updates that Windows Update provided.  Now, I am unable to perform any of the Setup functions from the Dashboard.  Each link fails with a different error message.

The probable cause, IMHO, is that the Windows Server Essentials Management Service is not running and can not be forced to start. I get the message "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly".   Can any one help?

Thanks,

Phil

DNS servers on NIC1 should includ ethe lopback address, but not as first entry

Hi

Windows Server 2000 R2 std with Essentials.

In BPA I am getting below. How can I fix it?

Error: DNS servers on NIC1 should include the loopback address, but not as first entry

Problem:
The network adapter NIC1 does not list the local server as a DNS server; or it is configured as the first DNS server on this adapter.

Impact:
If the loopback IP address is the first entry in the list of DNS servers, Active Directory might be unable to find its replication partners.

Resolution:
Configure adapter settings to add the loopback IP address to the list of DNS servers on all active interfaces, but not as the first server in the list.

BPA model version: 2.0

Thanks

The "Set up Remote Anywhere" dashboard dialog rejects my valid GoDaddy Credentials

$
0
0

The way I read this dialog box, it is asking for the User name and Password for my GoDaddy account.  I enter my correct GoDaddy credentials yet the dialog responds with "The user name or password is incorrect.  Retype your user name and password."

This prevents me from setting up the Remote Anywhere"!

I am building a new Server 2012 R2 Essentials server to replace my (too difficult to keep running) SBS 2011 Standard server.  My domain name is the same.  My public IP address is the same.  My MAC will be the same upon retiring that SBS, so my router and router's firewall remain unchanged (that is a minor issue since I can rebuild the router firewall in a few minutes).  I already have a valid current certificate (from GoDaddy) and that will remain unchanged.  If I could just bypass this setup Remote anywhere dialog.

Either the dialog must accept valid GoDaddy credentials by fixing the dialog, or provide information to allow me to configure Remote Anywhere manually (bypassing Essentials faulty dialog).

The old SBS server is up merely for Exchange.  Everything else is already migrated to the Server 2012 R2 Essentials.
