I bought a new CNC machine, so need a computer to drive it. Dusted off one of my laptops that has been out of the loop for a year or so and ran it up. It is a Thinkpad X220, more than enough machine to drive the CNC cutter.
I did not want the Leveno junk on there for a dedicated machine so did a clean install of Windows 10. Everything went fine.
Then I went to join it to the domain, everything did not go fine.
Created new user on the Windows Server 2012 Essentials Dashboard.
Tried just using the Join Domain from the Settings/Accounts/Work Access/Join Org
That allowed me to access all the folders and what not from the client to the server. But on looking at the Dashboard the computer was not shown. Odd. Did some poking about and see the computer listed under Active Directory Users and Computers
/ Computers, but with no description.
Read a lot of posts about this and that, tried a few things here and there, managed to fix a couple of nagging but not critical errors on the server. But did not manage to get the computer to show in the Dashboard.
Rebooted server, rebooted client about 200 times.
Since this was a fresh windows 10 install thought to start again. Did new fresh install of the OS on the client.
This time I opened the server web page (it lists the connector for Windows 7 and 8 there), download the connector, run the server connector. Connector wizard can not find the server automatically. Write in the Servername.local wizard progresses
a few steps more and then poof gone. Look at Dashboard, no new client computer listed. Run connector wizard again, this time try the DNS address of the server, wizard progresses a few steps then poof. Same as before.
Hmmm, getting irritated. Reinstall client OS again. This time try the Windows Server 2012 R2 connector. That fails with a note that this is for a different OS on the server side. Fair enough. Go through the Join Domain from
the Settings/Accounts/Work Access/Join Org
So the computer is again listed under Active Directory Users and Computers / Computers, but with no description.
It is not showing on the dashboard. I want it there so I can set up backup and what not. I want this done before I start installing all the drivers and Gcode programs to run the machine.
Windows 2012 essentials server, base language is in Japanese. I am using this as a file repository for my office and running an SQL database from it.
Server is configured with 6 X 2TB hdd and a single 2TB for the root drive. Hardly using any of this. Lots of space left. MB is a Supermicro X9SAE. OS Version is 6.2.9200 build 9200, 8GB of ram. Not running any virtual machines.
All updates installed.
Laptop is Thinkpad X220, base language is Japanese, installed windows 10 and English language. 4GB of Ram, 500 or so GB HDD. Nothing special. DNS is pointing at the server already.
If anyone wants to have a lot of fun try getting a Japanese computer to change language. MS seems to have made this particularly non-intuitive.
If anyone has any ideas what I am doing wrong please let me know. Willing to try most anything legal.....
