Network Drive Keep Disconnecting

$

Environment is Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.  Workstations are a mix of Windows 7 Pro, both 32 and 64-bit.

Network drives keep 'red x'ing out.  Double clicking does not open them.  I have applied a registry fix to the workstations (HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Service\lanmanworkstation\parameters, and added a keepconnected dword) and a net config server /autodisconnect:-1net  to the server.

Rebooting will bring the network drives back online and apparently, when I access the system through the Remote Web Workplace I am able to double-click and bring them back on-line.

I have had this problem on other servers so it may well be something I have done.  I am creating the shares and then mapping the drives using Windows Explorer, Computer, and the 'map network drive' at the top of the window.

Thanks for any pointers or good articles.

Where to find specific information? We have a windows server 2003 R2 32bit running as active directory and dns server.
We have less than 25 employees. We would like migrate our server's active directory and dns server to windows server 2012 essentials.

Issue with Office 365 integration module

I have an issue with the Office 365 integration module on one of my customer's Windows Server 2012 Essentials servers.

Recently they switched to a new Office 365 plan, but the integration module still thinks the customer is on the old plan. This doesn't seem to affect functionality at all, so I think it's just cosmetic. On the Office 365 tab of the Windows Server Essentials dashboard, under Subscription it lists the old plan and says the subscription has expired. Under Licenses it says "your subscription includes 0 licenses" and "0 licenses are assigned to user accounts."

Steps I've tried to resolve this issue:

  1. Created a new Office 365 test user account (after switching plans) and then on the Windows Server 2012 Essentials dashboard clicked 'Change the Office 365 administrator account.' This made no difference.
  2. Uninstalled and then reinstalled the Office 365 integration module. Again, this made no difference.

I suspected there might be an issue in the Office 365 back-end, where the customer's Office 365 account was somehow still associated with the old plan, but they said that wasn't the case.

I opened a service request with Office 365 support about the issue with the server dashboard, but this was their response: "As we are online service support team, we provide limited support on local application extension...you may need to contact the Windows Server support team for further help."

As it seems to be just a cosmetic issue, I'm not going to open a paid service request with the Windows Server support team, but I'm interested to know if anyone on the forum has struck this issue before or has any suggestions.

DFSR Replication Error in Single Server (1 DC) Essentials Environment?

$

A few months ago I took over administration of a Server 2012 Essentials R2 server that was poorly administered by the company's last outsourced tech. support.

One of the remaining issues is that the server is throwing Event ID 4012:

The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the folder with the following local path: C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain. This server has been disconnected from other partners for 257
days, which is longer than the time allowed by the MaxOfflineTimeInDays parameter (60).
DFS Replication considers the data in this folder to be stale, and this server will
not replicate the folder until this error is corrected.

I've waded through what others have done to resolve this, but in most cases the fix involves multiple DCs. I don't get why the DC is trying to replicate at all when it's the only DC. I assume this is a left over artifact from a former migration where the office may have had a second DC in the mix... but, there's only the 1 now.

Should we follow the steps for "How to perform an authoritative synchronization of DFSR-replicated SYSVOL (like "D4" for FRS)" in KB2218556 or just turn off the replication? I pretty much want to put it back to what it would have been out of the box for a single server environment.

Error code: sec_error_revoked_certificate

Hi,

Since a while, i am getting this error:

An error occurred during a connection to xxxx.remotewebaccess.com. Peer's Certificate has been revoked. (Error code: sec_error_revoked_certificate)

In Chrome it will be:

Your connection is not private Attackers might be trying to steal your information from brunew.remotewebaccess.com (for example, passwords, messages or credit cards).

You cannot visit xxxx.remotewebaccess.com at the moment because this certificate has been revoked. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later. NET::ERR_CERT_REVOKED

This started the day I mistakenly used a xxxx.remotewebaccess.com i just removed the minute before.

Any help would be much appreciated

Anywhere Access OVER ssl-vpn

Hello All,

I am quite impressed by the functionality and ease of use of Anywhere access in Server 2012 Essentials. But, enabling the outside world to directly connect to my Domain Controller is one of the few things i will never, ever do.... But then again, AA ís great.....

So i am thinking about a 'hybrid' solution' using a SSL-VPN to enter my local nertwork, using a completely different router to create a VPN-connection, and then acces my server using Anywhere Access... But is this possible and how do i configure AA in this scenario?

Thanks in advance for your answers / thoughts!

You do not have permissions to open the dashboard

On a clean install of 2012 R2, I joined an existing domain and added the Essentials role.  After that, I configured it which took about 5 minutes.  At the end, it placed an icon on the desktop called "Dashboard".  It will not allow me to open this no matter what I try.  I get this error:

Cannot open the Dashboard
You do not have permissions to open the dashboard.  Please log on as a network administrator and try to open the dashboard again.

I am using a domain admin account.  For laughs, I tried a couple accounts, but had no luck.

The log at "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs\dashboard.log" shows "Dashboard.Forms: Dashboard: Non domain admin cannot access dashboard."

Server Manager shows a green up arrow by Manageability for WSEE.

BPA shows only one error about Windows Server Backup and unsupported partition, which from what I gather is to be ignored as a false alarm.

Not sure what to do here.  Nothing seems to work.  Ideas?  Suggestions?

Error trying to Connect to WSE 2012 R2 with Connector Software - The server is not available

I had to completely reset my MS Surface Pro 3 due to virus activity, so it was wiped and reinstalled. It had previously connected to the Server without hiccup. Ever since doing this I cannot reconnect using the SERVERNAME\Connect process - it continually fails. I have reviewed the forums and web for a week trying different solutions to no avail. I would appreciate it if someone could advise?

I have:

  1. Ensured that the Connector Software update is not installed from Installed Updates
    1. Checked the Bindings in IIS Manager against the WSS Certificate Web Service and it is set to SERVERNAME.
    2. Ensured my time on the Client is synchronised
    3. Tried connecting using the original PC-Name and when that didn't work, I have tried a new name and removed the old device from the server.
    4. I have ensured that I am on a Workgroup.

The install process finds the server sets up connector and asks for my network user name and password and then continues for a fair time until it comes back with the error”:

"The server is not available/ Try connecting this computer again, of for more information, see Troubleshoot connecting computers to the server.”

I am not sure how much of the log to include as it all doesn’t fit:

Procedure needed to completely remove and re-install 2012 ESS connector

After removing a computer from the domain and then rejoining;  The connector icon is the tray is now grayed out and says the connection to the server is unavailable.   I can still access the mapped shares and network printers thankfully, but server backups for the workstation have ceased.

I would like to completely remove the connector from the machine and reload it as if it were a new installation.   is there a procedure to do this?

Publishing RemoteApps through Essentials R2 RWA portal

Hi

I have the following setup (based on research of forums regarding need for RemoteApps to be on a separate server to the WSE2012 DC)

1. Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 running the native Remote Web Access components setup (with public certificate & remote access) - this was setup using the 'Setup Anywhere Access' wizard and is successfully providing RemoteDesktop/Dashboard access using the External URL https://remote.ourdomain.com (when used from Internet locations)
Installed Services: Remote Desktop Gateway (TSGateway)

2. Windows Server Standard 2012 R2 with Remote Desktop Services role installed in Session Virtualisation mode (with test RemoteApp programs published within QuickSessionCollection) - this is working for Internal users with the URL https://serverApps/RDweb (when used from Internal location)
Installed Services: Remote Desktop Management (RDMS),
RemoteApp and DesktopConnection Management (TScPubRPC),
Remote Desktop Connection Broker (Tssdis)
Remote Desktop Services (TermService)

I need help with configuring the 'setup' to allow RemoteWebAccess to Externally present the RemoteApp programs (so that "PublishedApps" can be used when at Internet locations via the RWA portal)

Thanks in advance, Colin

WSE 2012 - Cannot connect client, certificate error

$

Hello,

Some weeks ago, I got a new Windows Server 2012 Essentials computer set up as a home backup server. I connected four client computers, which all worked just fine. Then, a few weeks ago, a client computer stopped being able to connect, and I'm trying to fix it. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the connector, which gives the error that "Cannot connect this computer to the network: The server is not available. Try connecting the computer again, and for more information, see Troubleshoot connecting computers to the server."

The weird thing is, on my other client computers, it asks for an admin account on the server. The one that doesn't work allows me to use the credentials of a user (and recommends against using an admin account).

I have the ClientDeploy.log from the latest installation attempt; below are some of the most important-looking parts (I can put the entire thing into Pastebin if needed). I've also run Robert Pearman's "Windows Server Essentials - Configuration Tester", which gives a few errors. Part of the output is below as well. His blog post (http://titlerequired.com/2014/02/14/windows-server-essentialsconfiguration-troubleshooter/) says that the CA name is important, but I can't figure out what it should be. (I think right now it is named COMPUTERNAME-CA, with COMPUTERNAME being the name of the server.) Does anyone know?

I've tried everything I could find on the internet, including a bunch of IIS commands and things like that. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the entire Essentials role. Nothing helps. I did notice that I have four different SSL certificates. Also, accessing"https://192.168.xxx.xxx//connect/default..." through a browser generates a certificate name error, but using "https://COMPUTERNAME//connect/default..." instead works just fine.

Thanks in advance for your help.

DHCP not pushing DNS address to clients

Clients connect to the DHCP and are assigned an address and correct gateway.  They are not able to connect to the internet because the IP v4 DNS address is not pushed.  As long as I set the DNS manually it works on the clients, but some devises are not working.  I could blame the device, but the only difference from letting my router (Netgear WNDR3700) manage the DHCP duties the clients not getting a DNS address.

This ipconfig /all from my Windows 8.1 laptop with DNS set to automatically get address has IPv6 DNS server addresses and I cannot connect to the internet.

I have followed best practices using the Server Manager wizard to setup DHCP and DNS on this server.

I have had this server running and my router managing DHCP and DNS for years.  I wanted to configure the server to manage DHCP and DNS for my home network, but I will have to go back if these problems persist.  I have normal consumer devises such as my smart TV and DirecTV recievers that are not working will with Server 2012 DHCP.

Thanks

Windows Server Essentials Setup Fails

$

We set up a Windows Server 2012 R2 server to be migrated from a Windows Server 2008. The migration process moved over Active Directory, DNS, and other objects successfully, however, running the "Configure Windows Server Essentials" wizard will fail with an unknown error. After some digging through the logs, we demoted the new server and re-ran the setup which completed successfully and we were able to enter the Dashboard to continue the setup process.

Getting the workstations to connect through the connect wizard gives us an error stating that either the trust relationship, or the time is off-sync with the server. The time is not off-sync.

So, thinking it was most likely the Windows Server Essentials Experience Role, I removed it and re-added it only to be back where I started with the Configuration wizard throwing errors because it doesn't like being on a domain controller.

Under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs I was able to find these errors being thrown:

[3332] 141115.210552.3357: DeploymentService: No answer file found. Keep waiting.
[3340] 141115.210557.3514: DeploymentService: No answer file found. Keep waiting.
[3436] 141115.210602.3556: DeploymentService: No answer file found. Keep waiting.

In a KB article it mentioned adding the ServerAdmin$ and MediaAdmin$ accounts to the "Log on as service" default domain controller policy, which has been done, but when we expand "Policies" we're met with this error:

"Resource '$(string.VerMgmtAuditModeEnable)' referenced in attribute displayName could not be found. File C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\inetres.admx, line 1495, column 249"

We're able to click "OK" to go past it and edit the policies, but I'm not exactly sure if this error is associated with the mayhem of the configuration wizard.

This server lives in a 5 - 7 workstation and the only roles that are installed at the moment are: Active Directory Domain Services, DNS, DHCP, Windows Deployment Services and Windows Server Essentials Experience.

With these errors we cannot open the dashboard, when we demoted the Windows 2012 server then ran the config it succeeded, but the workstations would not connect to the server using the http://server/connect wizard method, thus not showing up in the devices tab, thus not being about to set up remote access properly.

WHS 2011: Remote Web Access - NET::ERR_CERT_REVOKED

Hello,

I just setup Remote Web Access on my WHS 2011 server at home.  When I use my Android phone (Sprint service which is outside my LAN) I can access the https://name.homeserver.com just fine.  I get the login page and can access the folders and files and download files just fine.

But, outside my LAN of course, on my laptop using a friends wireless, or my phone tethered to my laptop for internet service I get an error in Chrome below (also similar message with IE):

Your connection is not private

Attackers might be trying to steal your information from name.homeserver.com (for example, passwords, messages or credit cards).

Not sure if I post here or on the Time Warner Forum but figured out this forum has smart people. To get around the failure to resolve FQDN for the DNS I have added the Google DNS Servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) is this the correct solution or am I missing something?

Server 2012 Essentials freezes and stops responding

I have several customers all running Server 2012 Essentials who experience freezing/lockups after a running for approximately a week.  Symptoms are that local PCs can not logon to the network or access mapped drives or network locations on the server.  The only recourse is to do a hard reboot.  Below are the System Event logs from two systems.  I have listed the last two events before the restart and then the first event after the restart.

Here are two failures from SYSTEM 1.

  • 12/30/2014 9:09:29 PM  WAS Event # 5186 - A worker process with process id of '13128' serving application pool 'WebApiService' was shutdown due to inactivity.  Application Pool timeout configuration was set to 20 minutes.  A new worker process will be started when needed.
  • 12/30/2014 9:16:19 PM  Service Control Manager Event # 7036 - The Windows Update service entered the stopped state.
  • 1/2/2015 12:01:58 Kernel General Event # 12 - The operating system started at system time ‎2015‎-‎01‎-‎02T18:01:58.494060300Z.

We had another lockup yesterday and the system logs show:

  • 1/4/2015 9:23:19 PM Service Control Manager Event # 7036 - The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the running state.
  • 1/4/2015 9:27:22 PM WAS Event # 5186 - The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the running state.
  • 1/5/2015 8:47:45 AM Kernel-General Event # 12 - A worker process with process id of '10040' serving application pool 'WebApiService' was shutdown due to inactivity.  Application Pool timeout configuration was set to 20 minutes.  A new worker process will be started when needed.

Here are the log events from SYSTEM 2:

  • 12/16/2014 2:07:23 AM Service Control Manager Event # 7036 - The Windows Modules Installer service entered the stopped state.
  • 12/16/2014 2:11:04 AM Service Control Manager Event # 7036 - The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the stopped state.
  • 12/16/2014 11:48:91 AM Kernel-Boot Event # 18 - There are 0x1 boot options on this system.

Here is another lockup on the same machine later in the month:

  • 12/23/2014 2:02:29 AM Service Control Manager Event # 7036 - The Windows Modules Installer service entered the stopped state.
  • 12/23/2014 2:03:35 AM Service Control Manager Event # 7036 - The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the stopped state.
  • 12/23/2014 10:54:04 AM Kernel-Boot Event # 18 - There are 0x1 boot options on this system.

The 1st system looks like it hangs around 9pm after some WAS activity.  The 2nd system looks like it hangs afer Windows Update based on the times itr occurred (2AM).  I have several other systems that are exhibiting similar results but have not looked at their logs in detail as of yet.

Any ideas how to get to the bottom of these issues?

Missing Computers in Dashboard Server Essentials 2012 R2 after migration form SBS 2003. SBS Computers container shown in AD

Hello everyone,

After migrating from SBS 2003 to WSE 2012 R2  the existing computers do not show in dashboard.  When I created a new computer account via \\servername\connect it does show up in the dashboard correctly.  All computers and users are functional but I can only manage the new one.  The old computers are listed in AD under the SBS Computers container.  The new computer created is in the only one in the computer container in AD. The newly created computer does not have any Organizational Unit OU when queried via PowerShell, but the ones not showing up do.  Can I open Active Directory and move or drag these computers to the computer container then later if showing up in dashboard delete the SBS Computer container??  It's a production box and is administered remotely.

PowerShell query shows all FSMO roles were transferred to WSE 2012 R2.

dsquery computer on the computers that do not show in the dashboard displays OU=SBSComputers and OU=MyBusiness.  The new computer that shows in dashboard doesn't have any OU's only CN=Computers DC=DomainName but has the same DC=local

The WSE 2012 R2 domain name is the same as it was before migration.

The old SBS 2003 server is disconnected.

Thanks.

Server essentials 2012 uses wrong certificate for Exchange OWA

I have two servers  (Essentials 2012 and Exchange 2013) behind a firewall. port 443 is routed to essentials.

I have set up arrconfig following TechNet  jj200172  (in fact I followed this link closely for the entire setup).

Our client has a single external static ip & two certificates (godaddy) . I’ll call them arr.help.ca   and mail.help.ca

On the lan, I has split dns so that Outlook trying to reach  "http  mail.help.ca" gets the local ip.  In fact all is working fine on the Lan.

From the WAN  "https  arr.help.ca"   present the essentials web page, with desktop and shared folders working fine, but...

From the Wan   "https  mail.help.ca/owa"   presents the owa logon page, but also the browser warning that the cert is incorrect.

The problem is the cert presented is arr.help.ca, not mail.help.ca

The cert chain is fine (i.e. the godadddy intermediate cert is trusted),

       both certs are not expired,

       the cert subjects are correct.

Any idea's on how to troubleshoot this?
