Can't Install Windows Server 2012 Essentials

I'm trying to install Win Svr 2012 Essentials on a system with a Core 2 Quad 9550 and 8GB of RAM.  Previously I installed Win Server 2012 Standard Evaluation on this same system and it installed with no problem and ran fine for 2 months.

The installation seems to go OK and gets past the point where the Metro interface is presented and I enter the admin password etc.  Then later it says it's continuing with the installation and then a dialog box pops up saying simply "An error occurred". It gives no details about the error but just suggests you try to install again, or call Microsoft or your hardware vendor etc.  It also gives you the opportunity to save the log files which I've done.

I've tried re-installing but the same thing happens every time.  I looked at the log files but couldn't find anything pointing to the cause of the error (but then there's a ton of info in there and I'm not expert enough to digest it all - nor do I have the time).

In googling this problem I see that many other people have this same problem but so far I've seen nothing pointing to a general solution.  A couple of people have reported that things like removing a card reader or some other unecessary hardware from the system fixed their problem.  Since my system is very barebones with nothing other than a video card this kind of solution is not one I can try.

With so many hits on google about this problem I would have thought that there would be a solution but if there is one I can't find it.

Anyone have any ideas?
