Upgrading Server Hardware: What is the Right Way?

I have been "experimenting" with WSE 2012 R2 as a replacement to WHS 2011 using my 2009 vintage desktop motherboard. That went well until recently when I have had problems with client backups to the storage space setup within the storage pool. That seems to be somewhat common. I have setup the domain controller, and the client computers are all connected to the server and have access to the server files and folders as expected. But definitely a glass-half full experience so far.

I am ready to pull the plug on this hardware and replace the motherboard and a few of the drives with newer parts, retaining the case and power supply which are new.

Since the client computers are joined to the domain, can I simply remove them from the domain (return them to workgroup) then do a clean install of WSE 2012R2 onto the SSD boot drive, attach the other drives, setup the same old users with the same old passwords and the same old domain name and then rejoin the clients to the domain?

That sounds WAY too simple for a Microsoft product, so I thought I'd ask the experts here before I drive off the cliff.
