Storage Pool Setup

I just installed 2012 essentials and starting setting up the system. So far I set up the users accounts and the server folders. I have three drives. One for the operating system and the two others were intended to be pooled together. When I went to create a storage pool, I choose the two formatted drives, it gave me a warning "can't use one or more drives, check the drive connections and then add the drives to the pool". Now when I check, it shows me the two drives, one formatted and the other unformatted. I can reformat that one drive again, but will I get the same message? Both of these drives were formatted before I tried to create the storage pool and for some reason one of them became unformatted when I started the storage pool process. Seems like creating a storage pool is simple, but not sure if I need t odo anything else prior to create it. I appreciate any help.
