Hi,

I recently rebuilt my WHS 2011 with Server 2012 Essentials but am experiencing issues with backups when the Client computer backups folder is on a Storage pool.

If the Client backups folder is on the system drive or an individual hard drive it works fine but as soon as I move the folder to a storage pool it fails after around 1-2%.

I see the following errors:

On the Client (Windows8) -
Event ID 8194 - Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

I've tried it with a storage pool of 3 disks with parity, and 2 disks mirrored, both scenarios fail.  I've tried with ReFS as well as NTFS for the file systems.

I can replicate easily: move the Client Backups folder to C: or other individual drive and it works, move the folder to use a storage pool and it fails every time.  I've tried rebuilding the server many time with the same result. MyWindows 7 client doesn't back up either. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas how to resolve this?

Thanks,

Using Groups on a share not visible when accessing from Remote Web Access

Hi there,

I am trying to finalise my Windows Server 2012 Essentials install. I have trouble with the creation of shares and the application of good practice i.e. using groups. If I create a share using the dashboard, for example test onD:\ServerFolders\Test it will automatically set Access level for all domain users as'Read' and the creator (my domain admin account created on install) as'Read/Write'.

If I look at the share permissions of this newly created share I have 'Everyone' ~'Full Control'

In the NTFS permissions I have all newly added domain users permissions as ~ 'Read & Execute', and the creator permissions ~ 'Special'. In addition I have SYSTEM ~'Full Control'& Administrators ~ 'Full Control'

If I log in as one of the users using Remote Web Access I see the new share.

Back on the server I create a new group and add all the individual users created from the wizard. I then add this group to the NTFS permissions with the same'Read/Write' permissions and subsequently remove the individual users created from the wizard. In my mind all of these users 'should' have the same permissions now they are in that group, with the same assigned privileges. However, when I refresh the shares in Remote Web Access the new folder has disappeared for the logged on user.

I have just about tried every permutation of creating shares, but ultimately ending up at the same results - not visible in Remote Web Access when using a group.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Test server Essentials 2012

I am currently running a SBS 2011 network, I currently set up a new box with Server 2012. I want to set up a test network using Hyper V and run Server Essentials 2012 with a couple of workstations win 7, win 8.  Has anyone tried this? I am finding this to be a tough task, seeing that SBS 2011 handles DHCP, and the server 2012 has two nics and it's own router. I can't seem to get it going.  I want to test Server Essentials and then replace the SBS 2011 with Essential Server 2012,  We just moved out email to office 365 and no longer need the resource  hungry SBS 2011.

VPN checkbox grayed out in Anywhere Access wizard

How can I clear this box to complete the wizard?  I have ports 80, 443 and 1723 open on the firewall.  I'm not absolutely sure, but I believe that the two ISP's coming into the business are not blocking any ports - I put a ticket in last Friday to have EarthLink open theirs and I set the Verizon FiOS router to the least level of security, thereby letting the SonicWALL do all the blocking or not on these respective ports.

Is there a way to schedule a monthly repair of the backup database automatically?  I'd like to add an automatic scheduled repair once a month into WINAT, curious if anyone knows the executable and switches.

Thanks,

I have a domain recently migrated to Server Essentials 2012. When configuring DirectAccess based on the instructions inhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204618.aspx#BKMK_CA, the Remote Access Management wizard keeps failing to apply configurations.

I have been able to narrow down the problem to be with Set-DaServer command. When it tries to apply IPSec root certificate (I assure the certificate is a correct one), an error is thrown out:

How to skip domain joining during client deployment in a Windows Server 2012 Essentials network

$
0
0

This post describes a tempory solution that allows client computers to connect to Windows Server 2012 Essentials without joining the Windows Server 2012 Essentials domain. Please read the following Notes carefully before you take any actions.

Description

When deploying Pro/Enterprise/Ultimate Windows client computers in a Windows Server 2012 Essentials network, joining the Windows Server 2012 Essentials domain is mandatory. If the client computer is already joined to another domain, you are required to manually leave the existing domain; otherwise, the client deployment process will be blocked.

Currently we have received requests from customers asking for the option to skip domain joining in a client deployment. As a result, in this article we provide a solution so that the client can connect to the server and utilize the majority of client features without joining the domain.

Before you take any action, please read the following note.

Note:

If you skip joining the domain, the following areas will be impacted:

    • All features that require that you be joined to the domain will not be available, including domain credentials, Group Policy, and VPN.
    • Any third-party add-ons and applications that require that you join the domain will not be working properly.
    • Skipping domain joining in an off-premises client deployment is not supported.
    • This solution is only supported on the following Windows client versions:
      • Windows 7 Professional
      • Windows 7 Enterprise
      • Windows 7 Ultimate
      • Windows 8 Pro
      • Windows 8 Enterprise

To skip joining the domain during a client deployment

    1. On your client computer, go to Start and search for command prompt "cmd".
    2. In the search results, find cmd.exe and run as administrator.
    3. Type the following command prompt:
      reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Server\ClientDeployment" /v SkipDomainJoin /t REG_DWORD /d 1
    4. Complete the steps on the Connect Computers to the Server Help topic.

      Good day!

Last week we changed our primary server OS to Windows Server 2012 Essential. It seems that all works fine, but... There are "SERVER" device appeared in "network places" on other computers in our local network. How can we remove it? It located under "Other devices" category and when I try to double-click on it browser opens and redirect me to page http://IP_ADDRESS/Connect?. We don't need domain, so we use a Workgroup. I tried to disable SSDP service. It works but I got a problem with Routing and Remote access service (NAT stop working).

      Thank you!

      Hi,

I would like to run Windows server 2012 as a virtual machine from my Windows 8 desktop.

Is it possible? If so, what are the steps I need to follow?

Does it even make sense and are there any limitations? I just bought Lenovo ThinkStation E31 workstation and would like to  work on it using Windows 8 Pro and have Windows Server 2012 Essentials just runinng in VM to support my business. I'd prefer not having decicated server machine if possible.

      Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Presence of Server Essentials 2012 slowing down client internet acccess

      $

      0

      Hi all,

Was hoping someone cold help me. I have a home network that consists of various wireless and wired clients (pc's, tablets, smartphones, etc). Prior to server essentials being released I was using WHS v1 but decommissioned it and built a new server with Server Essentials. I have noticed that when the server is running all of my client devices have unusually slow internet access. Access overall is pretty slow but there is also a very noticeable long pause when I first open a web page and it just sits there for about five seconds then loads the page. If I shut the server down everything returns to normal. I can also tell it is related to the server because when it is in the actual process of shutting down all client devices lose all internet connectivity until it completes the process but once it's fully down all internet access is restored and runs at normal and expected speeds.

My limited expertise is in storage and not networking or servers so I am not trying to do anything other than keep it simple and use the server for client backups and network shares and data storage in general. The server is running with all default roles and the only changes I have made to it is I added the .NET role (to accommodate PowerChute) and I set the server DNS to its own IP of 192.168.1.20 which is permanently assigned by my router. I did this because I read another post about how this can help speed up internet access when a server is present but it made no change. My suspicion is that the server and router are both trying to perform the same functions which is causing the internet access lag on the clients.

Anyone have an idea on what I should look for that might cause this? Possibly a role that's enabled by default such as web server or DHCP or something that is safe to disable without removing any of the general functionality? I ask because I don't want to make any changes unless I am sure of the consequences first. Not too long ago I reset the firewall settings back to "default" thinking it would put them back to how they were right after install only to find out that nope, that's not what that does at all :) Ended up having to start over and install from scratch so would rather not go that route again.

Thanks in advance. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.

*PS...not currently using anywhere access so its not enabled currently but plan to in the near future.

I am trying to join the Exchange Server 2013 (Server 2012 Standard) on to Sever 2012 Essentials via the ‘Set up Exchange Server Integration’ wizard.

      The wizard keeps failing:

There was a problem configuring the Integration
      An unknown error occurred.
Make sure that the computer is connected to the network, and then try again.
If you continue to experience this problem, restart the server and then try again.

Both Servers are connected to the same domain via AD. I can see both Servers on the network and gain access to each server.

I have noticed that the Exchange server does not show up in the Dashboard under Devices. I can’t seem to find a way of connecting the Exchange Server to Server 2012 Essentials.

We are looking at a new server.  We were originally going to go with a server with SBS 2011.  Considering that SBS is no longer going to be a product, what thoughts are out there on what the best options would be, considering that we would still like to have all services on premises vs. online.  The following are considerations/questions we have

      1) Is it the case that 1 2012 standard server license allows a physical AND a virtual OS installation?

      2) If that is true, do we need separate user cal's for each server?

      3) If that is also true, could we install RDS on one server and Exchange on the other?

      4) What would we be able to do to get a companyweb installation?

I've just migrated from WHS 2011 to WSE 2012.

So far so good, but I got a whole disk of client backups created by the old WHS 2011. I'd hate to lose those backups.

I tried to just copy the directory to the new "Client Computer Backup" directory of WSE (after renaming the original directory WSE created) and then "Repair the Backup Database". That gives me an error stating that there is a "Backup version conflict".

There HAS to be a way to be able to use the old backups short of restoring WHS from the old backup!

As a related question: Has anyone tried to create a VM containing an old WHS installation restored from an image backup created by WHS itself? Since that seemes to be one other feasible solution.

Multiple Issues with Windows Server 2012 Essentials - Dashboard shows Server offline, File History error and Anywhere Access set up errors

      $

      0

I’m an IT Professional and I enjoy working with the latest technology, but this feels way too close to work rather than a hobby for me at the moment! It feels like I’m integration testing Windows Server Essentials here, rather than using a product that was RTM’d a while back. I’ve been reading various threads within this forum and have posted a couple of times but I’m not seeing many clear resolutions so I thought I would publish my own issue list in a single thread. I’m on sick leave following removal of a slipped disc in my back so I’ve got time to help the dev team walk through any of these issues if it would help. I just want the products (Win 8 + Server 2012) to work as Microsoft intended – i.e. well together but it certainly feels like WSE isn’t quite ready yet. So that you have the background, I did a clean install of WS2012E on 25-Feb to use as my home server and I have 2 Win 8 Pro and 1 Win 7 Home Premium clients. None of the clients are part of the Domain. Issues and status listed below:

      1. Client Dashboard and Launchpad report that the server is offline. RDP to the server does work and logging into Dashboard that way, the server shows the clients as offline under “Devices”. Workarounds:

      -         Firewall on the server turned off for all networks (not ideal, but turning it back on immediately kills connectivity to all clients (i.e. Client Launchpad’s report server offline; server Dashboard shows clients as offline)

      -         Must boot the server up first before all clients, and then wait about 20 minutes or so

      -         Occasionally even then a client may not connect. The only way to get a connection is (strangely) to turn on all 3 of my clients machines, then the server is available. It’s almost as if the last one that was shut down the previous night needs to be on to allow the server to become available again

      As per this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserveressentials/thread/b4d1cf0a-f27d-4594-8919-078b3b08045b

Status: Experienced since initial installation on 25-Feb and on-going

      2. File history is copying multiple versions of every single file (documents, pictures) as per this thread (mustn’t have been fixed): http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-GB/w8itprogeneral/thread/14cedd95-b3b0-4830-be00-da793dda9e27

      -         Multiple error entries in the Event Log on client machine   relating to process unable to complete due to configuration process failure

      -         Also, could copy Skydrive.LOCK because file was in use. Would try again next time

Status: Experienced since initial File History run on 26-Feb. On 6-Mar, I deleted the config and data files on client machine, disabled File History on the server side and am no longer using this functionality. I suppose now that Ive deleted and re-set File History, I could try setting it up again it I’ve gone completely off the idea of using this functionality

      3. File history keeps adding folders into the “Exclude Folders” list (Music, Videos), therefore no files are backed up from either of these libraries

      Status: As above

      4. Booting up the server, an alert appears saying 2 important services are not running;checking, both services are in fact running. These are Wss-something (relating to Media sharing) and Windows Remote Gateway. The reason I can’t give full details, is that the alert disappears from the list after Ive read it (I haven’t pressed ignore or delete) I can’t get it back!

Status: Experienced on boot up on 5-Mar and 6-Mar. On-going.

      5. In Dashboard, one client has started showing an “Error” in the update status field. In computer properties, its says “Error: Cannot detect available updates”. This morning, I received an alert about this, but again once I read it the alert has disappeared and I can no longer find it

Status: Experienced on boot up on 5-Mar and 6-Mar. On-going, but applies only to 1 of my 3 clients

      6. Folder Redirection process – after I added a new hard drive, I moved the “File History Folder” from C to D using the wizard. It moved the contents of the folder but threw an error at the end saying it couldn’t move some files. I manually enquired and the folder was still on the C drive renamed with .DELETE after it. I then manually deleted through explorer.

Status: This was on 26th Feb. Folder movement (scenario where folder being moved had data in it) not run again since

      7. Anywhere Access wizard reports 4 errors – including that I have 2 routers on my network (when I don’t), as per this thread:

      http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserveressentials/thread/8012fef1-7fea-414d-b47e-9308cf952ea4

Status: Ran the wizard on 27-Feb and 3-Mar.No longer going to use this functionality

      8. MyServer App cant be configured for initial connection to server – it says the credentials I enter for the Server name are incorrect, despite being the same (correct ones) that ive supplied to RDP

Status: App downloaded and configuration attempted on 5-Mar. Will use RDP, Dashboard Connector instead on client machines as a workaround

      Client backup failure

bit of a strange situation here. Running 2012SE with an SSD as OS disk, 4 (2*3TB + 2*2TB) in a mirror storage group and a single 2TB drive for Client backup - all hooked up via SATA II on a older motherboard with 6GB of memory and a E7300 CPU.

Originally had Client backup in a storage group - constantly failed - the read about better not having the backup target as a storage group. Changed it to be a single drive but guess what - less failures but no joy.

Checked drive - tried NTFS and ReFS - low level format - bad block detection - all no joy. Tried other drive - still failures (no reason - just failed, recovery taking ages and often failing itself). Tried disabling cache, made sure the Samsung patch was applied - all no joy...

then tried something quite different - hooked up a 2.5" drive via USB and moved Client backup on there. Guess what - all working fine!! Both drives I tried before faulty maybe?? Let's try - moved the 2TB to be hooked up via USB and moved Backup folder on there. Happy days - no failures whatsoever.

sooo - looks like my specific configuration doesn't like to make Client backups via SATA - but quite happy to do so via USB

Anybody got an idea here?? Don't mind USB (2) but is a bit untidy...

While asking - has anyone found a way to persuade 2012SE to give up storage freed up within a thinly provisioned storage space?? Mine states 96% storage efficiency but not handing it back....

      thnx

      Dennis
