Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Infrastructure Licensing Automatic Shutdown

$

Hello,

My issue has to do with a WinServer  2012 R2  Essentials  server which

continues to countdown to an automatic system shutdown due to

Server Infrastructure Licensing errors.

Specifically,  there is a series of three Infrastructure Licensing errors, Event ID 38.

Each of the three Event 38s references a “Check”  as the error origin: Root Domain Check, FSMO Role Check, and Forest Trust Check.  They all advise their check

has “detected a condition in your environment that is out of compliance with the licensing policy. This server will be automatically shut down if the issue is not corrected in (x) days/hours/minutes.”

Each of these Event 38s has an accompanying Event/error (50, 3, & 2)  which states that the  “Check in the Licensing component did not pass because  error 0x80070583 occurred in function . . . . . .  Class does not exist.”

The series of six events are  repeated every four hours counting down from 28 days out, and every half-hour closer to the shutdown.

Along with the Infrastructure Licensing errors are continuous  Application errors

Event 1000 ( Essentials RunTask.exe and multiple TrendMicro processes ) all reporting

Exception code 0xc0000142.

Net and forum searches show some previous instances of the problem; based on those

I have ruled out some suggested causes, such as another server on the same domain – this server is its own Domain Controller in a small office and has no outgoing or incoming trusts.

Running  the sfc /scannow yielded the usual ‘found  corrupt files but couldn’t

fix some.’

Running the command  “ netdom query fsmo “  checked out successfully.

Running DCDiag   yielded a timeout waiting for the UmRdpService service but little else.

Windows Updates has multiple issues.  Best Practice Analyzer in Server Manager refuses to start.  The system is extremely sluggish when trying to scroll through services. I feel these symptoms are all related, but I’m not sure how to prioritize.

Rebooting the server restarts the countdown and postpones a shutdown, but this is not a solution.

The previous instances of this exact Infrastructure Licensing countdown issue

seem to point to an offending service or driver. One tech resolved it by removing devices and restarting his print spooler. As I am supporting a remote customer I can’t disrupt their office by randomly removing devices on a “What if”  basis.

Another tech resolved the issue by isolating a third party driver /service which was causing a ‘heap exhaustion’ error due to a memory leak . He completely removed TrendMicro to no effect. I am analyzing  memory usages of various processes over time in Resource Monitor, but  have not identified  a leak.

And,  to return to the main issue, how do I negate this countdown to automatic shutdown  over licensing compliance ??

Any direction or suggestion beyond what I’ve already seen will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Full System Restore of Windows 10 Client Computer -- Won't Reboot

$

I've been running a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials machine to back up several client computers running Windows 10, and to provide remote access to the client computers. After the mid-November update of Windows 10, all of the client computers lost their connector software and their connection to the server. With two computers -- one joined to the server's domain and one running the Home version and thus just networked with the server -- I was able to reinstall the connector software and get things working.

The third computer, which had been joined to the server's domain, refused to reconnect -- I get a consistent error message saying that the computer is already part of a different domain and must be disconnected from that domain before I can reconnect to the server. If anyone has suggestions for resolving that problem, that would be the best solution.

Not wanting to wipe the computer and start over, I bought a new hard drive -- identical to the former C: drive -- and did a full system restore from the last backup to the server that was completed before the November hiccup. After six hours of restoration, the server reported that the full system restore had been successful. All I needed to do was click on "Finish" and the restored client computer would reboot.

But the client computer will not boot up. I get an error message stating that the file "c:\windows\system32\winload.exe" is missing or contains errors. It's not missing. Can anyone tell me how to reboot the client computer and repair any files that may contain information specific to my former hard drive?

hi,

I installed essentials 2012r2 now I try to connect 8.1 to the server but here is a little problem.

I gave a static ip adres for the server with 192.168.1.2  the default gateway has 192.168.1.1  with subnetmask 255.255.255.0

now my question is which ip adres I have to give for dns server ? the ip adres of server or the ip adres of gateway  !! to make connection with client computer!

SSTP VPN Revoked Certificate

$

We run Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2.  When clients try to connect to the VPN the error message given is The Certificate is Revoked.  As we run essentials the VPN configuration was initially completed using the wizard using a Microsoft Domain name and a goDaddy certificate I believe which was fully automated really so I am at a loss now how to go about solving this one.

If it helps I think all this started when we moved premises and to re-sync the public IP address of the server immediately I ran the anywhere access wizard again, releasing the domain and set it back up again using the same domain which, I think, has ultimately caused this problem.

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

No VPN Access using Server 2012 Essentials

I have 2 clients that we set up with Windows 2012 R2 Standard.

Using Server Essentials we setup the users and 'Anywhere Access'. This has been working without any issues.

Recently one clients SSL Certificate needed renewing which has been done and via the configuration section of Essentials has been re-added but no-one can access the server. We can log on to the server via Internet Explorer.

The second client

Recently had IP Telephony problems so a firmware upgrade to the router was performed since then the 'Anywhere Access' has also failed. I recently installed a completely different router but to no joy. The error message is 'Error 868 The remote connection was not made because the name of the remote access server did not resolve'.

I am attempting to connect to a freshly installed windows server 2012 essentials environment from a windows 10 desktop.  All systems are running the latest Microsoft updates.   The server is a single domain controller, and I am attempting to connect using the domain admin account.

When I attempt to connect to the windows server, I an unable to connect error message.   I've attached the following extract from the log file.

I have worked through the various help pages which includes references to inconsistencies in the certificates as a possible cause of this problem, but re-issuing the certificate on the server and performing an IISRESET does not fix the issue.

There is a secondary issue which I think is unconnected, but may be related.  When I run DCDIAG on the server I get the following error message:

      Starting test: Connectivity

   Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\xxxxxxxx
Skipping all tests, because server xxxxxxxx is not responding to
      directory service requests.

Again searching with google, I have been able to locate the cause of this error message as the RPC service is running.  Does anyone have a step-by-step set of instructions to check/fix the above problem as I'm not sure what I should be looking for when checking any firewall settings?

Connector install Fails - Package install did not succeed

Hello there, so where to begin....

Well this is a running server I built, it serves 2 roles, primary is a backup service for 3 computers and as a plex server in our home. Plex side is flawless, Backup side up till win10 upgrades, has also been flawless. 1 computer runs Win7, no problems, the other 2, a desktop  and a laptop were both upgraded to win10, and at that point the connector stopped working on both. This server had updates turned off, until MS released the update for win 10.....so updated the server. So Laptop pointed at server, requested connector....installs as intended. But the win10 desktop not so much....connector install fails .."package installation did not succeed....blah blah blah"

here is the tail of the Computerconnector log.....

Using router for Server Essentials 2012 R2

$

I am setting up a 2012 Essentials R2 server. The system came with the Essentials preinstalled. I keep reading that you can use the router to handle DHCP with essentials, but am not sure what settings you use on the server itself. Do I need to define the gateway in network properties in Server Essentials? It looks as if the server installs with DNS.

I do not have an ISP Static outward facing IP address. I plan on using a static IP address for the inside of the network. When I join the client computers will they automatically have their network properties set to the server for DNS and the router for DHCP? We got the Essentials system as it was advertised as not needing a lot of advanced IT management, because as a nonprofit our resources are scarce. Again, once I've added the users to the server, set up the backup, do I need to do anything (besides giving the server an inside facing static IP? Do I even need to use an inside static IP?)

I will want to configure the server to work with Office 365 in the future but for now just want to get 6 computers on the domain for backup and for sharing of server folders and am seeking the most simple path forward until we can hire a technician to come in and configure remote access and other settings.

thank you

Server OS Restore (Image) and Port Binding Incorrect, or Changed. Default IIS Website

$

Hello,

About one week ago, our small office of 5 suffered from our IP Provider being down for about 3 days.  Also, our static IP (block of 5 Comcast Business) was erased from the Comcast Modem, and host of other network connectivity issues were occurring.

I began to notice a few issues occurring that I felt were a result of the repeated "on - off - on - off" from the cable provider.  Also, I probably made some changes to the configuration thinking the problem was on our end.  I have daily backups so I figured what the heck I'd just reinstall the OS on "Drive C" (HP ProLiant with RAID and 8 drives).  All our data resides on the other 6 drives (6 of the 8 with the first 2 used for the OS) or our "Drive D".

After completing the restore per the Microsoft suggested process, our Anywhere Access has "broken" and displays the Port 443 and 80 errors along with the "more than one router on the network".  I'd struggled with the Anywhere Access configuration over the last few months and finally had our SonicWALL appliance playing nicely with the configuration and really working great.  I ran the Powershell Tester that I'd heard about and used previously and found that we had several errors.  I've included a copy and paste below.  It seems that the problem is largely with the IIS configuration and the HTTP and HTTPS port bindings.  I've resisted the urge to change anything at this point since the IIS is way beyond my ability and I'd do more harm than good.  If I have to, I can reinstall the OS fresh but that's not my first choice.  We're running a VM on the Server that provides our remote file sharing duties.  It's a bit tricky to configure and if I can avoid reinstalling the OS and reconfiguring the entire system, that'd be my first option.

This was a working system so I'm thinking that something with the restoration of the OS has possibly grabbed ahold of the ports?  I know that these issues can bury a person deep in a hole so I thought that reaching out to this community could help me.

Thanks in advance for any and all help, suggestions, or comments.

Invalid Product Key

Hello,

I recently purchased Windows Server R2 Essentials 1-2 CPU for OEM from TigerDirect.ca and I'm trying to activate a Trial version of the server OS that is already installed and functioning on a XenServer VM hosted on a DELL T110-II server.  The Trial will not accept the product key, and I'm trying to figure out what the exact problem is.

I now know there is a BIOS locked OEM version of the OS, but the one I ordered is just a plain OEM version that is not BIOS locked.

Will I need to obtain the Dell BIOS locked version? or is there a way I can get this generic version to apply?

Thank you for your assistance,

Rick Armstrong

I have a stand-alone Windows Server 2012 R2 where I believe the DNS environment has become corrupted in so far I have the following problems:

DCDIAG is unable to communicate with any of the forwarded DNS IP addresses defined in the network adapter reporting that each of the DNS IP addresses used by the sites broadband router are invalid as well as the broadband router itself.  [I'm not sure if the server should be configured to use the broadband router as the forwardDNS, or the IP addresses used by the broadband router.]

I have disabled the second NIC card, and the DNS entries on the main NIC are empty.  The DNS has forwarders defined to the ISP's DNS servers and the broadband router with static A records for the broadband router and the server.

I suspect some SVR records and A/AAAA records are missing, but I cannot find out what is required to be set up as I have access to no other server to verify what should be present.

Regression in Windows Server 2012 R2 Client Connector Overwrites Saved User Credentials in Windows 10

$

The new Client Connector for Windows 10 overwrites saved user credentials on non-domain joined computers, breaking the user experience. This is different than the behavior on Windows 8.1.

Normally when one logs into the Connector on a non-domain joined PC, a credential is created with session persistence, and is deleted when the session ends.  However, if a user-supplied credential existed in Windows Credential Manager prior to Windows 10, the Connector would skip creating its own session credential and simply log the user in seamlessly.

One assumes this is the correct behavior, as Windows has always allowed users to persist saved credentials for server shares. And as the 2012 R2 Connector does not have its own mechanism for saving passwords, this provided an effective work-around to provide a seamless experience on non-domain joined computers.

The new Windows 10 Connector, however, always overwrites user-supplied credentials with its own session-level credential anytime a user logs into it. This seems like unintended behavior, as it breaks the seamless user experience, since the next time the user logs into their computer they will no longer have access to remote shares.  In fact, the only way to protect a user-supplied credential to access the server is to prohibit users from logging into the Connector altogether.

I would like to understand if this was an intended change or merely a bug?  As it is, it is a rather large regression from the behavior in Windows 8.1. Thanks for listening.

Moving from SBS 2011 to Windows Server 2012 Essentials, same PC, different HDD, have I any benefit if I keep domain name and server name?

Hi,

I'm working in small firm and network administration is not my specialty.

If I replace SBS 2011 with Windows Server 2012 Essentials and keep domain name and server name, should I login with existing client PC to new server OS (same domain name)?

TIA,

Misha

Can't connect Windows 10 Pro to Windows Server 2012 Essentials (not R2)

Hi. We just installed a new server with Win Server 2012 Essentials and were trying to connect client computers. The client with Windows 7 connected with no problem but when I went to //[server]/connect on the Windows 10 machines all I got were the links to Win 7 and 8 and Mac. I then tried the patch for Essentials R2, which seemed to create a link to configuration of the connector in the app bar but that just ended with a message that it was not compatible. Obviously I am not an IT guy and I was wondering if I messed up something that cannot be fixed. As I said, the connection with Windows 7 went off without a hitch and the connector is supposed to be native in Server 2012 Essentials (not R2). All our machines are Dell.

Thanks for any help.

"The FSMO Role Check detected a condition in your environment that is out of compliance with the licensing policy." NOT a Domain Enviornment.

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me with an issue I am having with my server.  I am running Windows Server 2012 Essentials.  I have noticed that my server is shutting down every 3 days on average.  Upon searching the event logs, I am getting the following error messages:

"The FSMO Role Check detected a condition in your environment that is out of compliance with the licensing policy.  This server will be automatically shutdown if not corrected in 2 days, 10 hours, 0 minutes.  Please look for additional events for FSMO Role check to troubleshoot."  -- EVENT ID: 38

"The automatic correction of a noncompliant FSMO role condition was not successful because error 0x8007203A occurred in function f1301 [QHHR].
The server is not operational.

Make sure that your DNS server can be contacted and the following services are running: Active Directory Domain Services (NTDS), DNS Server (DNS), Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC). This server will be automatically shut down if the issue is not corrected."  -- EVENT ID: 7

"The FSMO Role Check in the Licensing component did not pass because error 0x8007054B occurred in function f1501 [YKIJ].
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

Make sure that your DNS server can be contacted and the following services are running: Active Directory Domain Services (NTDS), DNS Server (DNS), Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC).  This server will be automatically shut down if the issue is not corrected."  -- EVENT ID: 3

Here is the problem, this server is not a Domain Controller.  There is NO domain in our environment.  This is simply a workstation server.  Therefore, I cannot run DCDIAG, NETDOM, etc as there is no domain.  I ran the BPA and it returned no warning or errors regarding FSMO roles.

This server used to be a domain controller.  It was the ONLY domain controller in the domain; however, it was demoted and the domain was deleted.  This was done before the server was ever setup with our Business Application.

I hope someone can help me.  Thanks.
