I'm sure this question has been asked before, but what are the recommendations or best practices when it comes to what should handle DHCP? Should the server or router handle it? I've read posts that recommend either or. Thanks.
2012 R2 Essentials DHCP
remote desktop connection loads, I can see for a few seconds and then quits
Hello All,
Just trying to set up WSE 2012 R2 evaluation. Installed on a re-purposed pc. All tests on the lan side so far. I have a surface pro 3 and a desktop running 8.1 pro that won't connect to RDC. It looks like it is going to log on, it closes the dashboard session running on the actual server but then it just crashes and goes away. My windows 8.1 home desktop connects fine. Any Ideas?
Thanks!

I cannot integrate Office 365 with Server 2012R2
Initially, I had integrated Office 365 with Server 2012R2 so we could sync the passwords. This worked fine until recently. In the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard, all online accounts were shown as 'unknown', and when I tried to import online users (or do anything that required the online services) I got an error saying: "Cannot connect to Microsoft online services".
So, I thought I could remove the integration, and try to re-integrate it again. I removed the Azure Active Directory, and Office 365 integration. Which worked fine. However, when I want to integrate with Office 365 again, I get the error I used to get. To integrate Office 365, I took the following steps:
-Open the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard
-In Home, under Services, I went to "Integrate with Microsoft Office 365", and clicked on "Integrate with Microsoft Office 365".
-In the wizard I checked "I already have a subscription" and clicked next.
-I entered a valid user name/password combination and clicked next.
-I checked that I understand that the password policy will be set to strong and clicked next.
-Then a progress bar appears for a short while, and then I get the "Cannot connect to Microsoft online services" error again.
Does anybody know how I can resolve this?
Printing Issue Across Multiple Sites
Hey all,
Just re-posting a question as directed from another forum:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/ee68e50d-e241-4f15-ae3e-e1f81882aff3/printing-issue-across-multiple-sites?forum=winserver8gen&prof=required
I have since managed to sort of workaround this problem but would still like some clarity on what causes the problem in the first place, so I can implement a proper solution. (The workaround was to install the printer driver locally rather than via a Print Server)
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has figured out a way to print reliably to an off-site location using Windows Server 2012 Essentials Experience as the print server.
Scenario
Site 1
Located on the coast
On-prem Hyper-V server hosting Server 2012 Essentials Experience as the AD and Print Server, also hosting Server 2012 R2 as the Remote Desktop Server.
N.B. Currently the AD is set up as a Replica Domain Controller as I am shutting down their existing 2003 SBS box.
Site 2
Located on an island off the coast
No on-prem server. Staff connect to the RD Server to do their work
Copier located on site (Xerox brand)
Issue
Staff from Site 1 need to print to Site 2 copier
Previously (on their old SBS 2003 box) the copier was just set up using the external IP of Site 2 as the port, worked fine.
This setup won't work on the new server, the copier appears offline and won't print.
Is this a securities restriction with Server 2012? Is there a way to set this up to be fairly painless for staff at Site 1?
I can't see it being a port forward issue as printing still works from the SBS 2003 box, so the print jobs are being forward correctly from one source
N.B. Printing from Site 2 is not an issue, they can use Redirected printers for their local copier and the printers at Site 1 are loaded fine on the RD Server.
This is the last thing keeping me from shutting down the SBS 2003 box, driving me bananas.
Cheers
Access RWA through Corporate Proxy
Dear All
Please can somebody advise if any additional configuration is required to access 2012 Essentials RWA from behind a corporate proxy? I can access the server from a normal internet connection, but not when attempting through the proxy - particularly when attempting to launch the dashboard.
Ports 80 and 443 are open.
Many Thanks
Andy
Server backup warning: F:\System Volume Information\SRM\quota.md error [0x80070020]
I have configured a Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 Domain Controller to self backup its local drives. The backup ends without errors, but in the essentials panel the backup state is "Incomplete" and the following warning is produced during every backup:
Cannot backup F:\System Volume Information\SRM\quota.md, Error [0x80070020] The process can not access
the file because it is used by another process.
The directories to backup are the ones shown in the picture (the server language is es-ES):
As you can see, there are a few directories under F: excluded from backup.
This is what I've tried so far:
- Excluding F:\System Volume Information from backup: It results in backup failing with the following error: Error removing [F:\System Volume Information\SRM\] while destination VHD was removed. Error [0x80070020]The process can not access the file because it is used by another process.
- Uninstalling WSUS role as suggestedin the only thread related to this issue I've found in Microsoft forums.
- Reinstalling WSUS
I need some help here because I'm totally lost and I fail to understand why the backup fails. It is very important that the server backup ends without any error, so any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Client Backup Status Unknown
I have just gone live on a new install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.
When I go into the Dashboard and Devices, all of the clients backup status is listed as 'Unknown'.
If I click 'Customize Backup for the computer' (on any client) I receive the following error:
---------------------------------------
The backup is not successfully set up
An unknown error prevented the server from performing the task. Make sure that all services are running, and try again.
---------------------------------------
All services are running and I can't see anything in the event logs that relate to this. There doesn't seen to be any error in the backup log at:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs
I've successfully ran the backup database repair and used the wizard to move the backup destination to other drives.
The clients are all Windows 8.1 Pro with simple, non-raid, drives.
Can anyone give me any pointers?
Many thanks.

Windows 2012 essentials connector "the server is not available"
I just did a new install windows OS install for a Windows 7 machine that was previously connected to my Windows server 2012. I am now trying to connect it again to the server using the connector. I am able to download the connector to the PC. Right after being prompted at the screen for the user ID and password I get "the the server is not available" message.
I have tried having the PC wired to the network and wireless (not at the same time)
I can ping the server by name and by IP address
I have disabled IPv6 on both the PC and the server.
I have configured the PCs to use the Windows server as it's DNS server. Also set it to my router...neither makes a difference.
I have rebooted the PC many times and have also rebooted the server. I have 2 other PCs that are successfully connected (guess I won't rebuild them anytime soon)

Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials - Active Directory Synchronisation scope.
Hi all,
We have numerous customers with Office365 integrated with their new Server 2012R2 with Essentials Experience or Windows 2012 Essentials. What we have recently noticed is that if we change a field IE department in active directory and we left it overnight the sync hasn't taken that up to the cloud. This turns out to be an issue as the customer is looking to use Exclaimer software which logs into Azure AD and takes the fields used for the signature.
We tested the sync was working ok by changing a password for a user which was immediately replicated to the cloud, so we know the sync is working correctly. We've also confirmed the administrators details is working between the 2 environments.
So what fields is the synchronisation taking up to the cloud from Active Directory and which fields is it not using the Essentials sync tool?
(Yes we understand we could use Dir Sync but this is supposed to be the same animal but for less tech savvy businesses which will give them 1 place to change details.
Thanks in advanced

No Windows 10 reservation app if the PC is part of domain?
I am trying to reserve my free copy of Windows 10, but I'm faced with a problem. Hope someone can help
1> I've got a windows 8.1 desktop that meets all requirements for Windows 10, but unfortunately I cannot get the reservation-app to show up. I've checked and confirmed that I do have the necessary updates installed. I've also followed the steps in
this thread and ran the cmd-file. That almost immediately gave me the following result:
SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows"Setup"gwx\refreshgwxconfig"
Seems nice enough, but still no icon or app.
But I'm also running a server (sort of a hobby gone wild) running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. The Windows 8.1 Desktop PC is part of the servers domain. Could this be the cause for the missing app? Please keep in mind I'm not a tech specialist, just
a noob playing with computers.

Server 2012 Essentials slow network copy to Windows XP, 2003 sever
Copying Files from Server 2012 Essentials to WXP, W2003 via SMB is extremely slow speed is about 0,5 - 2MB/s. :( (copy to W7,W8 is fine about 11MB/s on 100Mbit LAN).
I havent any problem with psychical LAN. I tested transfer speed on other Linux(samba) = full speed. Copying files between Windows Server and Windows station is slower than between Linux server and Windows station. This isn't good ^^
I tried but it did not work:
http://mctexpert.blogspot.cz/2011/02/disable-smb-signing.html
Disable offload (TCP, IPv4,IPv6, V2) and RSS setting on network adapter.
Change GPO Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel data (always) and Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always) to Disabled.
Disable antivirus.
Update 6-6-2015
One more interesting fact, if I remote the server and do a file transfer from the server to the XP machine, I get no problem at all (up and down). = full speed
but
When I use the XP machine
XP --> 2012, 2003, XP, W7: 10MB/s
2012 --> XP: ) 0,5 - 2MB/s
Hypervisor: Vmware ESXi 6.0 HP Image.
Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 and Office 365 Integration
Hi
I'm in the process of moving a client from SBS Server 2003 to 2012 Essentials R2 and as part of this I am setting up a POC for Office 365 so that they can test before purchasing. I have generated a trial from our Partner portal and am currently trying to setup the Office 365 integration with this trial with no success. The error message that I get is,There was an issue configuring the integration, make sure the computer is connected to the internet and then try again.
The server is connected to the internet and I have validated that I can login with the tenant credentials to confirm that these are correct. I haven't created any users within the tenant and the only user on the server is the Administrator account. As this is a POC I haven't added their internet domain to the Office 365 tenant but I don't believe that this is required by default.
I have tried the suggestions listed in other threads related to this issue with no success, I have also applied the hotfix that was recently released that appears to address these issues. Any help on this would be appreciated.
I have checked the log files and the following errors are in them:

Setup Your Domain Name
Hi,
Currently running up a Windows Server 2012 Essentials and having trouble with the domain setup. From initial installation I have used a standard contoso.local domain name, so that setting is normal. Plus product key entered and activated, every Windows update installed :)
When trying to configure remote access on the Setup Your Domain Name screen with the options of "I want to use a domain name I already own" and "I want to set up a new domain name". No matter which option I choose I get the prompt;
"""
The domain name was not set up for your server. Wait a few minutes and run the wizard again.
The list of domain services available for your server cannot be found. Make sure your server is connected to the Internet. If this problem continues, wait a few minutes, and then try again.
"""
The computer is 100% connected to the internet. The only firewall in place is the Windows Firewall, which I have even tried turning off. The router is not blocking anything outgoing. I have tried a variety of IPv4 DNS settings the system is still on connected to the net and I keep getting the same error. From a domain management point of view I intended to do this all manually, but I should still be able to get past this screen???
From my research (err.. google) no one else appears to be having this problem.
Any suggestions / questions please let me know. Thanks for your time,
Steve
VPN remotewebaccess problems
Dear all
I have had to change the web address for Remote Web Access (RWA), because I stuffed up the settings trying to change from RWA to remote.ourdomain.co.uk.
Anyway, not able to work our how to download the SSL certificate I changed back to using rwa.
This caused the vpn settings to change, so I manually changed all VPNs from oldsite.remotewebaccess.com to newsite.remotewebaccess.com
However, some computers seem to pick up the old settings, and when I look at the adapter properties, it has reverted to oldsite.remotewebaccess.com
Does anyone know why, and how I can prevent this?
thanks in advance
RDP working VPN not: Using AnywhereAccess
Hello I have a problem connecting to my Server via VPN. It used to work but no longer does, and I can not see why.
I use Remote Desktop services. I am able to connect to my remote desktop sessions via the Gateway, but when I use the same Gateway to VPN, it connects for a second then drops straight away.
I have tried removing my Anywhere Access settings and starting again, but I have had no joy.

RPD initially slow to login
I recently updated Win 2012 essentials to allow RDP into the desktop by updating the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
Create new DWord (32-bit) of DisableTaskOffload and set to 1
Problem is about 80% of the time when I login from my Win 7 computer, there is about 20 - 30 second of complete black on the window before it shows the desktop. Any clue why this is? Also happens when I remote in from an iPad.
Thanks.
Steve
