POP3 Connector for Windows Server 2012 Essentials when integrated with on premise Exchange 2013

Hi All,

I am replacing an existing Small Business Server 2003 with Windows 2012 Server Essentails and Windows 2012 Std with Exchange 2013.

In the old Small Business Server 2003 there was a POP3 Connector that allowed me to schedule download of the users emails from a remote POP3 server into the exchange mailbox.

Does this function exists in Windows 2012 Server Essentials when I integrate it with Exchange 2013? or do I need to purchase 3rd party POP3 connectors like "ST POP Connector for Exchange", "MAPILAB POP3 Connector" .. if so which one do you recommend?

Thanks

Group Policy ADMX files questions

Domain Controller is running Windows Server 2012 Essentials.

File Server is running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.

Clients are running Windows 7.  New network setup.

I was setting up Group Policy Objects for setting up printers on the clients and using WSUS and all was going well.  The clients are running Office 2013.  I downloaded the ADMX files for Office and setup the central store and copied the ADMX and ADML files there.  Now I do not see any of the original policies that came with Server 2012.  I see that I can download the Administrative templates for "Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012", "Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2" and "Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008".  Do I need to download some combination of these?  Can I just copy the files that the GPMC was using before I created the central store?  Any best practices that I should be following?  I would assume that if I install Administrative templates that there will be some time period before they show up....  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

On Premises Exchange Integration fails

Thru a series of misfortunate circumstances I have acquired a client that had either botched (or had another do the botching) of a Essentials\Exchange (in a VM environment) config, Essentials is running okay and Exchange is running okay except the part where on premises integration  is performed.

I've gone through the standard setup checklist (Integrate an on-premise Exchange Server with Windows Server Essentials 2012http://technet.microsoft.com/library/jj200172 ) and even tested enabling and disabling and re-enabling on my home lab setup without error;

What I know so far

there seems to have been multiple attempts at adding an Exchange Server or they decided on version upgrades (I found leftover server names in ADSI)

there is no logging of the why or reason on the Wizard failures (there is very very little documentation on the back end of this feature) the Error message is sadly lacking in any descriptive  message

I have dug down to the OPEIntegration configs but there is little guidance there as well, searching the registry has yielded no results

I think, but am not sure of, an Original 2 server deployment of essentials and Exchange (probably 2010) was initially deployed when 2013 was released they tried a deployment on a new VM thinking that other then the uninstall little else had to be done.

Exchange seems to be working (had to delete/recreate some users for inconsistent mailbox errors) creating mailboxes in Exchange and not through the Essentials interface, users are sending and receiving mail

More docs on the backend processes for essentials would be nice I love SBS but lets face it some of the ALL in One stuff is badly documented getting the linked "find out more about this error" pages updated would be nice.....

I'm low on space on the system drive.  I've move the system folders to the data drive.  I added a drive (same size) but I can add it to the system drive.  It would appear that I need to replace the system drive with a larger drive but I find conflicting information on how to accomplish that.  I an running Windows Server 2012 Essentials.  any help would be truly appreciated.

Upgrading from SBS2008 to 2012 Essentials

I'm upgrading from SBS2008 to 2012 Essentials.  I understand that Essentials does not include everything that SBS did (Exchange, DC, DHCP, AD, DNS, SharePoint Companyweb, etc), so I'm guessing that I will need multiple servers.  I'm trying to figure out how to apportion and configure my overall system.

I have seen posts that indicate a recommendation to set up 2012 Standard R2 on the 1st physical server with Essentials R2 on a virtual server.  And then using other virtual servers for other functions.  Why would I do that?  I don't understand all the advantages and disadvantages of how to set up the various functions.  Should I put Exchange server on a totally different physical machine, a server #2?

My number 1 server is a HP Proliant DL160 with dual quad core, 24GB ram and hardware RAID.  What would you think would be best to install on that server and what would you put on another server?

2012 essentials r2: how to "manually" set up host and virtualized 2012e r2?

So 2012e r2 is supposed to make it easier to setup a virtualized server.

How do we set this up? Found this for OEM partners, but looking for "manual setup" directions:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/341bd905-1d99-4e3d-af16-04aadf9e9ab9/installing-windows-server-2012-essentials-r2-hyperv-role

Can one manually install hyper-v on essentials then setup VM, and then remove some roles to get back to a leaner host? I'd like to set this up manually and add particular drivers and Intel RST management, then remove roles

thanks

Upgrade to server 2012 standard

Hello

I am currently running Server 2012 Essentials and want to upgrade to Server 2012 Standard.

I have downloaded the 2012 Standard trial ISO and would like to know where to from here? I have done a bit of reading about upgrading essentials 2012 whereby I understand one can do it from PS using a command. What I am not clear about is how I can get server 2012 std onto the server to upgrade? Or is the PS command taking care of that in that it installs 2012 std onto the server?

I had a look at this

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8f966fcc-2afb-48f7-919b-6c61b71d7947/windows-server-2012-essentials-upgrade-to-windows-server-2012-standard?forum=winserveressentials

and the last post is exactly what I too need to know.

Can someone please advise what steps I need to take to get server 2012 std running?

TIA

combining essentials r2 hyper V with sbs2008 migration

$

I want to upgrade from SBS2008 to Windows Server 2012 Essentials.

From what I have been able to determine so far, one good final configuration would be a physical server with 2012 R2 (Essentials without the Essentials roles) running Hyper V with another full copy of Essentials R2 on VM1 and Exchange 2013 in Std 2012 on VM2.  Then use other physical servers for other functions such as Sharepoint and SQL.

But in doing the migration, one is supposed to install Essentials in migration mode.  My question is this: to combine the two processes (getting essentials in VM1 and doing the migration) in the migration steps, would one first install Essentials without Essentials roles but with Hyper V, then 2nd join this physical computer to the SBS2008 domain, then 3rd install Essentials on VM1 in migration mode?  Is this how it would work?

Thanks in advance!!

Changed Client Domain And Lost User Files

After re-installing windows server essentials I went to my client computers to point them towards the new domain name.

Logging onto the client computer was the same as if it were connected to the original domain.

I logged on all the files were there and I proceed to disconnect from the domain and reconnect to the new one after doing all my files had disappeared on the desktop, documents, and etc.

I tried going to C:\User\OriginalUserName folder to recover user files but instead the folder was empty.

I tired taking ownership, granting myself full permission, and enabling the view of hidden and system files, but still nothing.

I have no clue where the files went, but they are very important and I need away to get them back.

Any suggestions or advice?

Connector fails

I have just installed a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and I'm about to connect the first Windows 8.1 client. After entering the username and password (in Connector software setup) it fails with the following information:

"Cannot connect this computer to the network

The server is not available. Try connecting this computer again, or for more information, see Troubleshoot connecting computers to the server."

The first thing that comes to my mind is DNS. In this environment there is a simple Internet router acting as both DHCP and DNS. Should the server's DNS be modified somehow?

Essentials Hyper-V and SQL/Exchange Questions

$

Looking at helping a company out that currently runs SBS 2003. They have onsite Exchange and SQL. They are needing to replace their hardware. Currently have 3 physical servers.

Hyper-V:

I'm looking at exploring using 1 server with more ram and better processor and run Hyper-V.  I've seen where Essentials 2012 R2 supports Hyper-V.  The VMs MUST be Essentials OS - this is fine.  Can I have 1 physical server running Essentials 2012 R2 and more than 1VM-guest (3 or so VMs) running Essentials?  I would of course purchase 3 licenses of Essentials 2012 R2 - but can the physical server support 3 VM Guests if it is running Essentials 2012 R2?  I've seen where Hyper-V is now supported - but the wording suggests only 1 VM can run on the host.

Exchange:

They currently have onsite Exchange 2003 and would prefer to keep the on-premise solution.  It is my understanding that purchasing SBS 2003 includes a license for exchange.  Is Essentials the same way or is there a separate purchase for Exchange server 2013?

SQL:

Basically same as Exchange - SBS 2003 came with full SQL server.  Is this a separate purchase with Essentials or can I run SQL on a VM?

Last question:

Assuming that Exchange/SQL are NOT included - do we know why Microsoft would remove these licensing features.  It would almost make more sense to move from SBS 2003 to SBS 2011 if that is the case.  Thoughts?

Thanks for the help

Essentials Experience post-deployment configuration fails

Hi,

I am attempting to install the Windows Server Essentials Experience Role on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard machine (Intel NUC Core i3 with 4GB RAM and a 100 GB OS partition).

I have completed the steps in the process up to the automatic configuration of Windows Server Essentials. The config wizard says it is Updating and Preparing the Server andThat is all the information that you need to provide. Your server is being prepared for use and may restart more than once. This may take up to 30 minutes.

It goes to 87% and then encounters an error saying An error occurred while configuring Windows Server Essentials. Please try again.

I have tried this http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2013/12/04/you-may-be-unable-to-run-post-deployment-configuration-wizard-after-you-install-the-windows-server-essentials-experience-role.aspx but it doesn't work either.

Any suggestions why this happens?

Back ups of Win 8.1 clients unsuccessful

I have Windows Server 2012 Essentials installed in a Hyper-V VM.  The build is 6.2.9200.  There are five connected client machines, two are Win 7 Pro SP1 and three are Win 8.1 Pro SP1.

None of the Win 8.1. clients are able to complete a successful backup to WSE 2012.  They all fail between 15% to 40% of the estimated back up.  I tore down two of the clients, one desktop and one laptop. and did a fresh new Win 8.1 install on each (fully patched) and connected them using the Connector software.  Same result, backs are unsuccessful.

The Win 7 clients back up without a hitch.

Guidance would be appreciated.

Windows Server Solutions Certificate Template is missing

$

We recently had a tech install a copy of Server 2012 essentials at a customer unfortunately they did it wrong as the customer had a current domain and they installed essentials as a new domain then removed all the required roles to allow demotion of the server then joined it to their original domain and promoted it as a DC.  They have since started using it and was to use remote access but we are running into certificate issues the biggest of which is that Windows Server Solutions Certificate Template is not even available as a template type in the CA and when running Add-WssLocalMachineCert you get a submit error and the CA shows a denied entry with a disposition message of denied by policy modules the request was for a certificate template that is not supported by the active directory certificate services policy

I'm not sure how to resolve this and trying to recreate the template by duplicating the web server template then copying the settings from another Server 2012 essentials server with the template did not resolve it, still get the same error.

Any advice appreciated. Reinstalling the server is not really an option as they let the customer start using the server already.

Folder Redirection and File History at the same time?

Hi,

Some days ago, i implemented Folder Redirection on my Server 2012R2 Standard with the Essentials Role. Since then my previously installed File History on the client Windows 8.1 pc isn't working as it should anymore. Seems that File History cannot backup files, that are redirected on a network space.

Is there any chance, to reactivate File History on the redirected files or is this an either-or-thing?

Kind regards,

Andrew

Windows Server 2012 Essentials upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Standard

I've just upgraded a Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Standard via the Powershell command. The server restarted and is now Standard version. However I've noticed in the services that one particular service fails.

silsvc <Failed to Read Description. Error Code: 2 >

C:\Windows\system32\silsvc.exe

It is set to automatic.

I guess this is part of the essentials license and hasn't been removed. I would like to keep the Essentials Features however on a VM I replicated the same problem but when I removed Essentials features this service also got removed.

Is it ok to just disable this service? because I want to keep the Essentials features. Is it going to cause any issues?

Windows 2012 Hyper-V backup.

Our ERP software depends on a constant connection to a Hyper-V machine running Windows 2008, every night when the Windows 2012 Server starts the backup of the Hyper-V machine, our ERP clients lose their connection to the database.  They are able to reconnect after a short period of time, but they have to close and restart the client application.

Is this behavior normal for Hyper-V backups?

Thanks.

IIS issues when installing the Server Essentials 2012 R2 role

$

Unfortunately, I did not remove IIS before installing the Essentials role, and have since had many user/setting changes before realizing that the IIS side was not working correctly. So now, IIS does not work for the website that existed before the install and all the web interface pieces for Essentials also do not work. I tried to move the old website to port 88, rather than 80, but IIS would not start for the essentials tools.

Is there any way to re-establish IIS as the Essentials role would like? I don't really want to reinstall everything, if I can avoid that. Sadly, we only have the one server, so it was our domain server, file server, and web server. This is for a small non-profit. We recently acquired licensing for Office 365 for Non-Profits and I installed the server essentials role on our Server 2012 R2 Standard and attached it to Office 365. Mostly everything was working, except for IIS.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

How to manually assign a SSL certificate to Remote Desktop Services on Server 2012 Essentials

I've configured Anywhere Access before using the wizard and buying a cert from GoDaddy and the wizard configures the SSL appropriately.

Long story short, I have a new GoDaddy SSL cert assigned to the appropriate domain name that I didn't purchase through the Anywhere Access wizard.  How do I manually configure the cert to work with Remote Desktop Services?
