Ok here is my scenario....
Step 1. .... Test new WS2012E for a month or so to see if it’s worthy of upgrading from my aging WHSv1. So…I ran it thru its paces... had a few speed bumps... but It looked and worked slightly better than WHS2011 (Which IMHO the team that built that flavor (2011) of WHS need new jobs as window washers and should never be allowed to code ever again!!) Any who....All seemed good so I moved onto......
Step 2. New Fresh Install of WS2012E to go into production environment >>> My Home. So now I have this Fully functional, 12TB's of Storage with all backups working great! Push forward a weeks until 2 or 3 weeks ago the Server decides it wants to start acting funky.. The RWA Search function is now defunct, I keep getting WINDOWS SEARCH isn’t working and I need to contact the person in charge of the server... Well, that’s me and nowhere in these forums or the internet could I find a solution. Now I know WSUS was a hot fix solution....and I installed it at my own risk but I installed it and It worked fine but I felt I didn’t need it so I uninstall it and now the Websites give me Error 500.19!! Great.... So now I’ve wasted enough of my life and countless hours troubleshooting the issue... Soooo..... I moved on again
Step3. Go back to my test server and plug my backup drive into my test server to actually see how a restore of JUST THE DATA would work.... and I'm slightly impressed at how simple it was. In the dashboard I click on Restore Files from a backup to this server and go thru the wizard of asking me the who, what, when and where I was to restore my data. I proceeded to just restore my User folder.... took a bit of time.... but it restored it all. Now here’s the awesome result of right clicking on my user folder and going to properties. Files and Folders 1970 Files 65 folders 65MB's on disk. Ok....so... after waiting over an hour to restore over 80+GB's of data I say to myself.... WTF!!!?!??! I go into the folder and click on a sub folder and guess what pops up... I need permission to view this file.... click ok to get permission..... Grrrrrrrr!!!! this is insane!!! SO i right click on my user folder.... Click on Security and Click the Advance Button. Now mind you...before I clicked the Advance button my User "Jeff" has "FULL CONTROL" and everything else except "Special Permissions" So... I clicked on Advance and see that the Owner of tis folder is "SYSTEM" so Now I CHANGE the owner to JEFF and check the "Replace all child...blah blah blah.... this object" wait for 15 minutes click ok and ok...and then BAM! I right Click on the same folder and lo and behold...... 49,563 Files 7,105 Folders.
Now.... is it just me.... or is this tad excessive to have to do for a restore....?? What I still haven’t done was test out restoring to a folder that is just a general share like say... the
Music Folder. I have over 75,k files of Music alone. By having to manually changing the permissions of said folder...I can’t wait to see what my results of that is going to be! I'm pretty sure I've done file restores from my old WHSv1 with none of these headaches......
is it just me or are the programmers @ MS purposely sabotaging what the coders before them managed to accomplish?? And after reading a lot more posts in these forums…. I’m about 99.44% sure I’m going to be reinstalling WHSv1 again sometime in the next week.
What amazes me more is that I don’t think MS cares one bit about what most of us here say and how we all miss Drive Extender. :-/
Well… if anyone has any insight as to what I might have done wrong (if anything) with my restore to have to go thru the above restore procedure…. I’d really love to hear it!
Thanks in advance
Jeff
