Running Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 alongside SBS 2008

Hello there. I am tasked with implementing a new server -- and bear with me because neither I nor anyone in my company have been trained to do this -- for my company. We already have a Small Business Server 2008 that controls a majority of our business, including email through Exchange, and so on. The SBS server is managed by an outside company.

The new server will solely house our project management software. From what I'm reading, Essentials may be my best bet but I want to ensure that it will not affect the SBS server in anyway.

They do not have to interact, but they will share the same internet connection. I don't see a benefit to having it even be part of the domain, unless it's absolutely necessary. Essentially, I'd like it to run in a vacuum, but be accessible by our computers here as well as in the outside world. Is this doable? Is there anything I should keep in mind?
