Setup of Server Backup Fails

I cannot complete the setup of server backup in my newly-installed server.  I walk through the setup steps including a warning that it will format my external hard drive.  When I start the setup process I get the following error message:

"An error occurred while setting  up the backup policy.  Ensure all the hard drives chosen for the backup destination are connected, or exclude those backup drives that are offline.  Also, ensure all the hard drives that are to be backed up are connected to the server, powered on and writeable, and then try again.  If the problem persists, check for storage related alerts."

I can find no errors related to this event in the Event Viewer.

Just to add insult to injury, the external drive is not recognized again as a device on the Computer display, although I can see it when I retry the setup process.  It is not recognized on any other computer that I plug it into.  This happened to two USB drives, so it is not a bad drive.

I can otherwise plug in another USB drive and copy files to and from the server.

It appears to me that Server Backup just "toasts" my drives and renders them unusable.

I am using drivers supplied in a trial download of WSE2012R2, and updated from Windows Update when I plugged in the drives for the first time.  One of the drives is a new WD My Passport Ultra, the other is an old Seagate.

Any help is much appreciated.
