I looked forward to upgrade from WHS v1 to WSE2012 because in WHS v1 Drive Extender didn't allowed the disks to spin down when they were not used. This was sad because of the noise (vibration) multiple disk cause and also because of all the power that is lost for running disk that hold data that is used only very few couple of times a day.
This is possible now with WSE2012 and it works ... kinda.
I set the disk to spin down after 5 minutes of inactivity (had 10 but use 5 now for better monitoring) and yes, they spin down correctly. Unfortunately, at least once every 30 minutes, they spin up again. And I have no idea why as this happens no matter if the server is used or not or if clients are connected or not.
So there must be some process that causes this. I suspected the media streaming service as it might scan for new media frequently but disabling it didn't change anything.
To be clear, for the system disk, I bought an SSD as I expected this disk to run most of the time so a SSD is a good choice for power saving and noise reduction here. I only want the other 2 disks to spin down, and those are in a Storage Pool with three Storage Spaces on it (1 mirror, two standard storage spaces). On those disk, media folders & user folders are located as well as the client backups. But that's it.
There souldn't be a need to spin up those disk again and again. Does anybody have any ideas what process might cause this?
Thanks,
Bernhard
