Server 2012 Essentials connector still joined client to the domain, despite registry setting

Hi, I'm running WS2012E as a Home Server replacement. It's taking some learning but I've gotten started. The connector software still sets the client to Domain mode. I did the registry setting that's posted everywhere. Did I miss a step? I actually still have a Microsoft account on my Windows 8 PC and it seems to work despite being part of the domain, anyway. Can I change it back to a workgroup computer and still access backup, dashboard, etc? What about the Windows 7 computers? I've only joined two computers so far until I learn more.

A few other miscellaneous questions:

Does starting a client backup prevent the computer from going to sleep? I found my Win8 machine asleep not long after starting a backup. I don't know if it went to sleep during a backup or after one failed. When I woke it up, the backup service on the server was messed up, stuck as in progress perpetually, with a bunch of other errors. The only way I got it going again was to delete the backups on the server. For now, I am using the "insomnia" tool someone created to prevent the computer from going to sleep.

Can I get access to the shared folders without running the connector software?

Will there be Homegroup support?
