Blank screen on logon with network domain accounts, but not local accounts win 8.1 clients

Hi

I'm having the following problem:

I have a network of several client PCs running windows 8 pro x64 and a server running Windows Server Essentials 2012.

I have recently upgraded a couple of these PC's to Windows 8.1 pro using the ISO from VLSC.

However after logon with a domain account both these machines display a blank screen with pointer instead of the start screen.  Task manager is accessible via ctrl-alt-delete. Explorer.exe does not appear to be running, start button does nothing. Selecting file, new task and running explorer.exe does nothing except flash a blank configuring windows dialog in the top left corner, explorer does not appear to run. Same behaviour on all clients.

But... when logging on with a local account or with a domain account in safe mode everything appears normally.

I've tried :

* updating the video card device drivers to latest

* running sfc scannow - no problems.

* fixmbr in safe mode

* doing a clean install of win 8.1 pro instead of an upgrade on client - same behaviour

I can actually switch user between a working local account and non-working domain account.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Grant
