Roaming Profile problems with Win 7 Pro machine

The Setup:  One Proliant N40L server running Essentials 2012, acting as domain controller, and several Windows 8 Pro machines, two Win 8 Enterprise laptops, and one Win 7 Pro machine - 10 clients altogether.  It's a small nonprofit office that serves people with disabilities, so it's necessary to keep everything as accessible and complication-free as possible.

On the Win 7 Pro machine, when I log in, I get a message that "There was a problem with your roaming profile" and that a local copy has been loaded.  When I log in as a regular user, the message is "You have been logged in to a temporary profile" and your settings will not be saved.  Roaming profiles on the Win 8 Pro and Enterprise machines all work fine with no such issues.

What I've tried:

  • Making sure all users have ownership of their profile shares, and even changing permissions to "Everyone"
  • Removing the machine from the domain, removing all user accounts, and rejoining the domain
  • Manually setting the local user account profile path to the server share
  • Changing local GP settings to synchronous log on and "wait for network before logon"

I do have extra Win 8 Pro and Enterprise licenses, and I'm considering just upgrading, but there are always possible hardware issues to think about, and I wanted to have at least one Win 7 machine for users who aren't comfortable with Win 8.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  Thanks!
